Product Description

Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario), a troubled young woman, becomes preoccupied with her mysterious new neighbor (Jessica Biel), who bears a striking resemblance to her dead mother. When an unexpected discovery results in a shared secret between the two, their relationship intensifies, and Emanuel's already-fragile world begins to spin out of control.

It's easily the worst film I've seen all year.

Emanuel has no trouble with lying, although in her case it is a defensive mechanism.

Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario) is a moody teen who lives in her own world. Her mother died giving birth to her. Not only does she blame herself, "murderer without a motive" she feels out of place. Emanuel has no trouble with lying, although in her case it is a defensive mechanism. Her words are cynical. She meets Claude (Aneurin Barnard) a boy who understands her and emulates her ability to lie.

When Linda (Jessica Biel) moves in with her baby next door, Emanuel offers to babysit a woman who becomes her mother figure to the dismay of her step mom (Frances O'Connor) who worries Emanuel may be attracted to women. If for some reason you weren't engaged in the film, at 22 minutes you will be, as Linda has her own issues and secrets that Emanuel indulges her and protects her.

The film comes full circle as do most indies of this caliber. I would recommend NOT reading a lot of reviews as one might reveal the plot spoiler early in the film, i.e. at 22 minutes, that really must be experienced.

This is not a film for everyone. It is on the arty side. Well constructed dialog. Winner of several indie awards.

Parental Guide: 1 F-bomb. No sex or nudity. Teens kissing.

This movie has great acting from both female leads. It has a gut wrenching independent film feel that wont soon leave you, once the movie ends. It's a story about life and death and how it can affect the human mind. Don't listen to the critics, they know not what they write.

Beautifully made movie. Very interesting! Amazing performances by Kaya and Jessica. It's a very dark and emotional movie. But really really good.

They probably thought they needed to sell this as a thriller and though it's disturbing, tense and suspenseful, ultimately it's a very imaginative and serious examination of two fragile psychologies who come together under unusual (to say the least) circumstances. I know this picture got knocked around at Sundance, but it's better written and acted than 90% of the films that get a pass from Sundance critics. If you like films of Terry Gilliam and want to see a young filmmaker trying to make something original, imaginative and heartful, give it a try.

I discovered this gem while scrolling through a website that listed all movies released (or to be released) in 2014. I was looking for something "different" and "interesting." To say "The Truth About Emanuel" fit the bill would be an understatement. It is strange, but then again, I was going for "strange." Unlike some other reviewers, I definitely did NOT have the plot figured out early on--(SPOILER ALERT!!! DON'T READ FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE PLOT OR ENDING!!!)--I was convinced up until almost the very end that it would turn out the baby was real and that Emanuel was the one living in a psychotic world of make-believe. I really like that the movie had three very strong female leads. Put that together with "Maleficent" and we've got at least two 2014 films with multiple strong female leads: we need more of that! Of course, Alfred Molina was wonderful, as always. He always hits the note right on key. But the women made the movie. I thought Kaya Scodelario, Jessica Biel, and Frances O'Connor were all brilliant. It's a disturbing movie, true, but it ends on a note of hope. Friendships, however weird, between women can just be so powerful and so mentally healthy, sometimes even if they start out as unhealthy. All feminist theorizing aside, however, the movie was gripping. It pulled me right in and I couldn't look away. Ultimately, it did what a movie is supposed to do--it entertained, drew me out of my routine existence, and made me think. If you're looking for a movie that is entertaining, but not the same old car chase, sex scene, and male hero coming to the rescue, look no further. I highly recommend it.

I liked this movie. I read the one star reviews so if you like atmosphere, angst and emotion, you will like this movie. If you expect the usually Hollywood, over the top visuals you probably won't like or get this movie. This is a sweet, thoughtful movement that brings us to the brink of madness. Dare you look over or do you turn away?

Emotionally packed story of how two people deal with loss and grief. Delusions, insanity, suspense, it is all here. J.Biel does an amazing job as per usual.
