Book Description

September 1, 2011
The rise of the Tea Party provides the best opportunity in modern times to reverse the course of overbearing, out-of-control government, but to be effective we must relearn the principles of liberty on which our nation was founded. The Truth About Liberty: How the Tea Party Can Save America, explains these principles clearly and concisely.

Unless we do something immediately, America's children might never know freedom. In fact, they're taught to fear liberty; in public schools and virtually all media, they're told that liberty is an obstacle to security, education, and the basics of life. Without the FDA, they're food will be poisoned. Without the Department of Education, they won't learn. Without the EPA, they won't be able to breathe. The government is their best friend. The Truth About Liberty shows that the vast, corrupt government of today is definitely not the limited Constitutional government established by the founders of the United States.

Attorney and movie producer Manny Edwards illustrates with stunning clarity just how far America has fallen from the great scope of freedom intended by the founders. He identifies precisely the political mechanisms by which these liberties have been lost - and how to get them back. With the Tea Party poised to take over the Republican Party and implement more conservative governance, The Truth About Liberty proposes a radical return to the founding principles of strictly limited government and minimal taxation. Virtually every product or service now provided by the government can be provided instead in an unregulated market - even roads, utilities, and national security. The staggering implications are examined with humor and keen insight into human nature.

The Tea Party has rejected the statist leadership of the Republican Party, but has not yet embraced a completely consistent set of principles that will assure lasting liberty when they take control. The strict liberty-oriented principles of the founders are now found primarily in the modern Libertarian Party, but their stance on abortion has until now been a major obstacle for conservatives in search of an alternative. In perhaps the most important chapter of The Truth About Liberty, the author demonstrates that the property rights basis of the Libertarian ethic does not sustain a right to abortion and unites the powerful Tea Party movement with the firm principles of liberty they desperately need to grasp. In the final chapters, The Truth About Liberty proposes specific ways Americans can peacefully seize freedom in business, legal, and community affairs and provides a realistic roadmap to actually achieving lasting liberty in America... while there's still time.

From the Back Cover

The founders of the United States believed that liberty is precious, but today children are being taught that liberty is an obstacle to knowledge, safety, and the very basics of life, and that the government is the only thing that can save them:

  • Without the department of education they won't learn
  • Without welfare they might starve
  • Without the EPA they won't have clean air and water
  • Without the FDA their food will be poisoned

Corrupt, overbearing, out-of-control government has taken the place of God, church, and family. Regaining the liberties intended by the founders is a daunting task, but The Truth About Liberty explains how to do it peacefully... before it's too late.

Whether you're a liberal, a conservative, or a libertarian, if you have any interest in individual liberty, this book is for you. It is bold, well-written, and motivating. I couldn't put it down.

For a long time I've known something was very wrong with our government, but I never really understood *what* until I read this amazing book. It explains how we lost our liberties and how we can win them back. As an active Tea Party member, it is very important for me to understand where the threats to my liberty come from, and what to do about it.

I always knew that we had bad government policies, but I never realized that most of what the government does is forbidden by the constitution in the first place, precisely because the founders didn't trust government to manage our lives. Whenever you have a problem, people usually call for more government to solve it, but it's usually the government that caused the problem to start with.

To show how much freedom we've lost, the author starts with a "day in the life" of a fictional character, Joe Freeman. His every move in business and private life is regulated by the government, from the lights he turns on, to the toilet he flushes, to the milk he drinks, to the driver's license and the permit he has to carry a gun. It's easy to identify with Joe because it's a humorous (and sort of sad) illustration of our own lives.

In chapter 2 the author explains how the privileged ruling class lives by different rules than we do, and so they're not really "representatives," but rulers.

The book's central theme is that the out-of-control government ruins almost everything it manages, and there are separate chapters addressing justice, Social Security, education, housing, food, jobs, and so on.

The author tackles some extremely controversial and difficult issues, and while I don't necessarily reach all the same conclusions, it has definitely affected how I think about the government's involvement in things like abortion, marriage, police power, and the military.

I've never read a book that discusses these issues with such a clear and persuasive focus on the principles of liberty that founded the United States, and I can't recommend this book enough.

I became interested in politics after 9/ll and have become one of those "political junkies" they talk about. I see our country declining so badly and now after reading this book, I understand why. What I can't understand is why our government pushes so hard toward a socialized system that clearly doesn't work anywhere in the world! This book is a real eye-opener that every American needs to read if we want to preserve the liberties our forefathers bestowed upon us. Their wisdom must not be ignored or we will lose our beloved America. Great read.

My parents emigated from Italy where I was born. They kissed the ground of America. They honored this country and taught me to do the same. Now, it seems it's fashionable to hate America. Why? This book tells why - it's because the America our founders created is a dim memory. Our political leaders have strayed from our founding principles, loaded us down with a nanny state that tells us how to live our lives! That's not the America we love. Edwards' book brings home how far we've gone and how we can return to our constitution and restore America's greatness. This book should be on every American's shelf!
