Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Like most every other talented contemporary singer, Byrd constantly maneuvers through a treacherous minefield: Music Row's insistence on compromises to assure "a wider audience" (read: radio airplay). He's faced that dilemma on nearly all of his albums, which include a couple of gems amid a bed of marginal, trite, or even unlistenable material. A bit of the latter leaks into the mix this time as well--the banality of "How'd I Wind Up in Jamaica" and a live version of "Ten Rounds with Jose Cuervo" reflect Nashville's obsessions with Jimmy Buffett-flavored fare. However, it's uphill from there. The title track (with Andy Griggs, Montgomery Gentry, and Blake Shelton) both celebrates and spoofs macho stereotypes. Portraits of small-town life in "Tiny Town" and "That's What Keeps Her Getting By" do far more to reflect Byrd's heart and substance. Even the barroom singalong "Drinkin' Bone" succeeds by fusing an animated vocal with a crackling arrangement (think the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women"). Beyond the throwaways, it's reassuring that, overall, Byrd's understated poignancy, sensitivity, and swagger-with-a-wink prove triumphant. --Rich Kienzle

5.0 out of 5 stars Great with few exceptions..... September 8, 2003
Format:Audio CD
Though there are some "weak" songs on this album (How'd I Wind Up in Jamaica being the worst), Tracy Byrd delivers some top notch material on his latest. Tony Martin, possibly Nashville's best song writer, continues to be a gold mine for the Byrd. The song, "Somewhere I Wanna Go", co-written by Martin, is the best ballad Tracy has ever recorded. The concrete lyrics with such a powerful tune make this song worth the 15 dollars alone. If released as a single, the song will not need a video. You can visualize the entire song in your mind. You will find yourself listening to this one over & over.
Tracy sings, "She just took a deep drag off that Marlboro Light, and said shut the door behind you when you go", on a song titled "When You Go." The song is about a man and what is going through his mind as he is getting ready to "say goodbye for good" to his wife. If you are a fan of true country, you'll love this one.
Overall, the album is great. The Nashville big wigs always have to throw in their 2 cents and make artists record "junk" they normally wouldn't. However, Tracy's "junk" is a heck of a lot better than most of the country songs that are topping the charts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back, Tracy!!!!!!!!! November 22, 2003
Format:Audio CD
This CD is wonderful. Thank you Tracy for recording again after too long of an absence on the charts. "Drinkin' Bone" and the "Truth about Men" are good ol' honky tonk songs. Country music has wandered away from its roots. Some of the artists seem to be changing to songs that are not in the title of "country" - REAL honest to goodness country music. That is just sad in my opinion. This new CD by Tracy has well been worth the wait! I give it 5 stars! Dee Haskins

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic and Alive! December 24, 2003
By Alicia
Format:Audio CD
For Country Music fans, especially fans of Tracy Byrd, this is a MUST have CD! Tracy Byrd has given off great music in the past years but his CD's just keep getting better and better! This CD is filled with EVERYTHING. Fun and goofy...to heart-touching tear jerkers...and smooth and crisp romantic country songs.
A few songs will catch you off guard with the first sentence, and make you think WHAT?! But the song gets better. For example, his song "You Feel Good"...starts off with "I like sleeping in the nude when it's hot and the moon is cool". The song is definately a Husband and Wife song...Another romantic...yet upbeat song is "Baby put your clothes on". It's a nice dancing song! And one of my favaorites is "Making memories of us". The lyrics just steal your attention..."I want to sleep with you forever I want to die in your arms in a Cabin by a meadow where the wild bees swarm..." Tracy Byrd truly has an amazing voice for all these songs! They send chills throughout your body!
In addition to these, there are wonderful down-to-earth songs like "Tiny Town". And all songs are truthful...especially "The Truth About Men!" The first time I heard this song I thought it was AWFUL because of what it said, now I find it hilarious! I just hope whoever I end up marrying is different than the MAJORITY of men! Haha! WONDERFUL CD GO BUY IT!

3.0 out of 5 stars too much truth but still decent July 27, 2003
Format:Audio CD
first off if i could i would have given this 3.5 stars... i liked it mostly for the up tempo songs i mean the truth sbout med is great then rounds of jose quervo will get you dancing and howd i wind up in jamica is done well. The problem is with this album was the ballads for some reason they just sounded all alike and rather hollow to me had too much of a down home senttimental quality to them the best was tiny town. i would recomend it but if your looking for Tracy Byrd power ballads this is not the album

3.0 out of 5 stars Questionable origin. July 25, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As with, "It's About Time", the cover and back art are not original. The cover photo is washed out compared to the original. There is no back cover art. The CD is not imprinted with the original art work. The music seems to play ok, but leaves the impression of being counterfeit. At best the appearance is cheap.
