Editorial Reviews

VERSUS X could become one of the greatest modern Progressive rock bands and the one with the most personality. Those four German musicians (Guitar-vocals, keyboards, bass & drums) perform an elaborate and suggestive music that goes through a lot of effort to create different ambiences. The lyrics (Sung in perfect English by a top vocalist) show an ambition that is only matched by the complex and hyper-refined instrumentation. If it is always possible to relate this band to some Seventies references (Some atmosphere and the singers' voice could evoke ELOY), this mainly translates in their feelings, not so much of the formal aspect of their work. So, the result is some decisively original tracks with a quite unique sound. Issued in 1994, their eponymous album can at times remind of some golden Progressive rock bands (KING CRIMSON, EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER, CAMEL...). The reissued Musea version from the year 2010 includes the seven remastered original tracks, plus the track ""Humans Not Involved"", regarded as having been the first VERSUS X composition, recorded in 1991. However, guitarist-singer Arne SCHAEFER and keyboardist Ekkehard NAHM's band truly got big two years later with ""Disturbance"", three long suites for a true success in their genre. Here is then a must from the Nineties ! With such an evocative title as ""The Turbulent Zone"" (2000), the determining influence on VERSUS X of VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR & Peter HAMMILL as far as composition is concerned, is quite evident. The Mellotron is present with a tonality that evokes ANEKDOTEN's Northern sadness. This band's talent is undeniable, both in studio and live. The proof of it is ""Live At The Spirit"", that allows to show the band's high energy on stage. This live album was recorded in 2002 at the Spirit Of 66, in Verviers, Belgium, given that Francis GERON's concert hall is particularly beloved by the Progressive rock line-ups. ""Primordial Ocean"" (2008) showcases four tracks in the 15-20 minutes area, plus one elegant piano interlude. ARNE SCHAEFER's lyrics still combine Science, Philosophy and metaphysical questions. The music stills reveals complex, intricated piano or (Often vintage) keyboards, as well as fine guitar interplays, symphonic arrangements and structures, subtle harmonies. Despite a eight year-hiatus, VERSUS X proves today that talent and ambition are still here, making the band one of the most authentic in today's Progressive rock scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sorry Bill November 13, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Couldn't disagree with you more Bill. This album is exceptionally good. Vocals are fine too. Next you'll be saying The Watch, The Flower Kings, Cast and Galadriel are just average.
The Turbulent Zone is recommended highly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Group in desparate need of singer/lyricist!!! August 13, 2001
Format:Audio CD
This group is talented in every respect except in vocals. Arne Schafer would do very well to stick to the guitar and find a new vocalist. His voice turned me off faster than any I have ever heard. As if his voice wasn't bad enough, the choice of lyrics for this piece of work was terrible. If I had the equipment to do it, I would remove the vocals from this CD and be very satisfied with the remains. Listen closely before you buy.
