Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

With a playful rhyme and exuberant line-and-watercolor pictures, this picture book will have toddlers cuddling with their caregivers (“After crawling, you can nap / Your tushy fits on every lap”) as they look at pictures of children using their tushies in daily activities: bouncing on the bed, rolling in the snow, splashing in the shower, spinning, and sledding (“Tushies small or tushies plump, pillow you on every bump”). The book includes an exciting visit to the zoo, which offers lots of backside views of elephants, giraffes, and monkeys. Then there is the toddler’s view of grown-up and baby bottoms at the beach. The climax is the kid on the potty: “I use my tushy / every day!” The sounds of the words are as much fun as the scenarios that celebrate the body and how it works, and kids will want to chant along with the infectious rhymes. A book to share and talk about. Preschool. --Hazel Rochman

Review

“Each of the delightful spreads gives readers a backside view of a variety of rears, human and animal, in myriad activities.” —School Library Journal

“We all have tushies, but readers will also all have smiles after finishing this book.” —Kirkus Reviews

“There’s a whole lot of “tushy” here, but the creative uses and variations will keep the concept lively for young listeners, who will undoubtedly be drawn to the sparkly underpants on the cover.” —BCCB

Finally someone has dared to expose the derriere, and with delightfully droll results! The uninhibited toddler set will relish this book. And those reading it aloud will have a grand time laughing from page to page. I love books like this because they make us all feel so connected to each other and our animal relatives. The illustrations are terrific, but it's the words and charming rhymes that make this book priceless. There's never been such a welcome book on this topic before. Thank you to the author and illustrator.

Don't you just think that's the cutest cover? The little girls undies sparkle! Even the title screams cute! When I saw this book, I knew I had to read and review it! Ms. Manushkin has taken a sometimes taboo subject, children's undersides, and made it fun. Tushy is an old word, not used as often as butt, bottom, rearend, or other words kids use, but it is so much more fun to say. I don't think parents or teachers would object to hearing a child say "tush" or "tushy." I know when I taught kindergarten, I didn't let my children say butt, but know I would smile at the sound of tushy.

This book is written for 2 - 5 year old children. I know these kiddos would absolutely love it! Why? Well, for one reason, it's full of rhyme and kids latch on to that. The text is also sing-songy. Children love rhythm and rhyme and this one definitely does that! Each page has no more than 4 lines of text and many of the words are simple so kids could read along with mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, teacher, whomever. Besides, like the book says, "Tushy's so much fun to say." I can just hear children quoting this book. My favorite is,
Every tushy's in the back. Every tushy has a crack! Where would you put underwear if your tushy wasn't there?

Tracy Dockray really brings this book to life with her illustrations. She has illustrated Beezus and Ramona and other Beverly Cleary books, so you may be familiar with her work. The illustrations are just cute! Children will find more on each page than just what the text is about. Every time I've read it, I've found something new.

The pictures are charming, but it's Fran Maushkin's text that wins the prize. Hurrah for tushies and The Tushy Book!

Every three-year-old kid thinks private parts are funny. The Tushy Book focuses on the bum and using rhyme, wit and cute illustrations just has fun with it. In clever, kid-friendly language it outlines how useful this body part actually is - practical for taking a nap, fitting comfortably on laps, sledding and keeping underwear from falling down. ("Sitting down would not be cushy if you didn't have your tushy!") This book makes you want to grab a toddler, sit them firmly on your lap and start reading, enjoying the harmless fun of this good-natured kids' book. Illustrator Dockray is to be commended on the outstanding pen and water color paintings that bring the words to life and will maintain a toddler's delighted interest from start to finish. For ages 2 - 4. Lauren Kramer

This is such a cute book. The rhyme of it kept my boys interested and they thoroughly enjoyed a book about bottoms. They are six and three and have begun the fascination with all things rear related so this book was a big hit. My three year old who is finishing up potty training was especially interested. I'm looking forward to using the tushy book as a potty training aid. I also recomend Zoo Poo as a potty training book if you're looking for non-standard books to help gain interest in the subject.

My girls were drawn to this book by the cover with the cute baby wearing the glitter covered diaper. I on the other hand had some reservations about the content. Can a book written about your rear end be tastefully done? As I read the book my fears were relieved. The book was very cute and not crude at all. The book has a website that is very cute as well. The site has cards, coloring and activity pages that would be printed and worked on after reading the book.

More About the Author

I'm so proud to be the author of the Katie Woo series--the first easy-to-read chapter books featuring an Asian child. There are 40 of these storybooks, some of them collected in paperbacks that offer four stories in one volume. A few of these collections are: "Katie Woo Rules the School," "Katie Woo and Friends," "Katie Woo, Don't be Blue," and "Katie Woo Loves School." I love writing these books and meeting my readers at their schools and through Skype visits. I can be contacted through my website: www.franmanushkin.com or by emailing me directly at franm@nyc.rr.com. I'm also on Facebook.
You can see a video about the Katie Woo books as well as find free downloadables at this website: http://www.capstonekids.com/characters/Katie-Woo/
I've also written A Common Core Curriculum-based series of six Katie Woo books to help first and second graders learn how to write poems, narratives, research pieces, and other forms. This series is called "Katie Woo, Star Writer." There is also "Katie Woo's Big Idea Journal that is fun to write in!
My books for younger readers include BIG SISTERS ARE THE BEST and BIG BROTHERS ARE THE BEST, which are helping young children accept a new member of the family. I come from a family of six children, so I know a little about growing families.
My board book, BIG GIRL PANTIES, is a romp about a girl who's leaving diapers behind for the pleasures of wearing panties like her mother and grandma and aunties! Another board book, THE TUSHY BOOK is a silly poem of appreciation of our behinds.
Can you tell that I love writing books for kids? My first book, "Baby, Come Out!" was published in 1973, and my most recent in 2015. I can't stop writing--it's so rewarding!
