Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 4–This holiday favorite is brought to life through Spirin's gorgeous illustrations. The last pages include the score as well as a note about the song's historical origins. Oval paintings act as windows containing the art, while text on the opposite page is framed by an ornamental garland from a pear tree. The elaborately detailed and exquisitely executed artwork, rendered in watercolor and colored pencil, has a Renaissance feel. Roman numerals are placed on the tree or the base of the tree planter to indicate which day is being celebrated. As the oval inset fills with calling birds, golden rings, swans-a-swimming, etc., readers will enjoy trying to count all the gifts. A must-have.–Diane Olivo-Posner, Los Angeles Public Library END

"The Twelve Days of Christmas" is a lavishly illustrated, illuminated edition of the popular Christmas carol of the same title, plus some historical background and insights into the origins of the carol. Medieval-style enriched gold-framed paintings adorn each verse of the lovely old carol, and a full copy of the lyrics and piano music capture the spirit of Christmas at the end of the book. "The Twelve Days of Christmas" will enchant children and adults of all ages especially at the holiday season's time of fulfillment.

My grandson wanted me to sing "The Twelve Days of Christmas" every time he spent the night with me. He added more and more each time, until he learned the whole thing. Then his Campfire group had a lesson over music, and Charlie was able to share his favorite song! I had found this book and gotten it for him for Christmas, so he had a gorgeous visual to accompany his "show-and-tell." This book was worth twice what I paid for it!

This is a nice presentation of the beloved 12 days of Christmas that delighted my young nephews, ages 2 1/2 and 16 months. They were taken with the beautiful pictures and excited when they were able to identify the small changes in each following page. And they wanted it read over, and over and over. What a wonderful way to introduce this classic to a new generation.

The high quality paper and luminous illustrations will make this a special way to celebrate each Christmas as they grow older. This is a perfect pre-Christmas gift for the small children in your life.

Although the song is originally French, by the death of Dickens it was published in Great Britain where it became an instant tradition.

Gennady Spirin is one of the most talented illustrators in modern history, and this lovely version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" captures the classic spirit of the song with exquisite illustrations. I have been collecting his works for years, and have bought this book in multiple copies, to give to friends and family for Christmas.

The art in this book is stunning. As you go page by page, with each addition of the successive twelve gifts, the new page shows all the gifts so far. And I don't think that at any point is a previous gift just repeated--you see different positioning and different poses each time. It's just splendid.

There is also a double page spread of the words accompanied by the musical sheet music so you could play it on a simple instrument and accompany singing. As I read through the book, I found myself remembering the previous gifts before I read them. Obviously this song is a great memory tool! I've survived bacterial spinal meningitis with brain damage, so I should use this song this season.

The end of the book briefly explains the controversy as to whether this song was used by Catholics to express their faith during oppressive times. That got my curious, so I went online and found the listing of the twelve Christian concepts the twelve gifts could represent, printed it and trimmed the paper, and inserted it in my copy of the book. I love having that in there!

Several years ago I made some leather ornaments using rubber stamps of the Twelve Days of Christmas. I don't think I had heard that Catholic story then. The song and the images made me feel good!

I highly recommend this book. It is a treasure.

Illustrated in an old world style, this book recites the lyrics to the 12 Days of Christmas. It also includes a history of the song at the end. That is pretty much it.

This is a hard cover book with a reinforced binding and decent quality paper. It's a great gift, and a book that you will enjoy having on hand for holidays.

The illustrations are incredible. Lushly detailed in a classic style that will age well. The page facing each illustration has one round of the song, and each illustration includes everything in that round getting increasingly detailed and intricate from the partridge in a pear tree to the 12 drummers drumming. It's printed in a high enough quality to appreciate the detail of the paintings. While the paintings are similar, they are not identical. It doesn't look like just appending the original illustration. Each painting is well balanced to fit in the oval frame.

At the end of the book is the music for the song, and a brief history of the lyrics.
I do like this book for families. It puts me in mind of some of my favorite antique Christmas books that come out once a year as part of our family traditions. Reading it, I could imagine sharing it with future generations at Christmas time.
