Book Description

Every journey is an adventure.
Especially one into the unknown.

The Twisted Vine is set in the heart of France and is a deeply romantic but suspenseful tale. Roxanne Rudge escapes her cheating boyfriend by going grape-picking in France. She feels vulnerable and alone in such a big country where she can't speak the language and is befriended by Armand le Clair, a handsome Frenchman. Armand is not all he seems, however, and she discovers a darker side to him before uncovering a dreadful secret. She is aided and abetted by three new friends she has made, charming posh Peter, a gifted linguist, the beautiful and vivacious Italian, Yvane, and clever Henry of the deep brown eyes and the voice to match. Together they unravel a mystery centred around a beautiful chateau and play a part in its future.
Join Roxanne on her journey of self discovery, love and tragedy in rural France. Taste the wine, feel the sun, drive through the Provencal mountains with her, as her courage and resourcefulness are tested to the limit.
Review by strongly recommends The Twisted Vine. They are a quality control website for authors and said "Wonderfully atmospheric and enticingly mysterious, The Twisted Vine is the debut novel from author Alex Martin. An evocative mystery that takes a delightful foray into the heart of France, where the best laid plans take an unexpected turn. A journey of self-discovery, love and tragedy that elegantly contrasts the essence of French life with darker and infinitely more sinister overtures. Cleverly constructed and written with an acerbic pen, Martin transports her readers to a transient world that she imbues with life through inspired character development and an ear for authentic dialogue. It’s a truly engaging tale which turns a simple journey into an all-encompassing adventure that tests the boundaries of courage and resourcefulness at a time of vulnerability.

Impeccable in detail, memorable and enthralling, The Twisted Vine is a notable debut from an author with a bright future ahead of her and is strongly recommended."

5.0 out of 5 stars What a summer adventure! July 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a fabulously good read. I LOVE, love, love this book. Alex Martin snatches her readers up from their everyday, pedestrian existence and transports them to the sultry South of France. The sights, the smells, the local flavour of the French countryside awaits you in her new book, The Twisted Vine. Take a summer trip to the wine country of France as you enjoy darling Roxy's adventures. Ms. Martin's rich writing style creates fully fleshed out characters who you enjoy spending time with, the sterling along with the smarmy ones. The fresh dialogue makes you laugh out loud. The book is a time capsule of summers gone by, not too long ago, when life was simpler, without cell phones and laptops. You will find adventure, friendships, romance, greed, heartbreak, villains and a bunch of really delightful Twenty Somethings having a swell time at a tough summer job harvesting grapes in France. The Twisted Vine is a page-turner that you'll stay up very late to read, and you will wonder at the end how everyone got on in life. Any chance of a sequel? High praise for Alex Martin indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars totally wild ! December 31, 2013

I simply could not put this book down ! The setting and the characters were so out of the ordinary, each with its own bit of folly or is it their magic touch ? The twist and turns are totally unpredictable and at the same time totally down to earth ... A amazing balance has been achieved by the author in my own opinion !

5.0 out of 5 stars Mouthwatering! June 27, 2012
By J.R.W.
Format:Kindle Edition
I feel like I've been on holiday!
What a juicy twist of a gastronomic tale. A Twisted Vine reminded me of that wonderful novel A Year in Provence; but then add in a thoroughly modern heroine in Roxanne, a few foreign escapades and a rotten Frenchman, and voila!
Alex Martin writes incredibly well, and her descriptions of rural France are divine. They infiltrate through the story like little pockets of colour, painting the scene so perfectly, as did the food and wine. It appealed to all my senses.
Our female character has plenty of guts, setting off as she does to go grape picking around France, and the author knows her subject well, which makes for insightful reading with the kind of detail that sets the book apart from the usual run of the mill romance. Not only does the plot and the setting carry the romantic gene but it holds up as a light crime/drama at the same time, and there are some well drawn, believable characters.
If you like France and grown up romance with all the food and wine you can consume then get stuck in to The Twisted Vive. A truly wonderful slice of rather classy escapism. I really enjoyed every morsel.

What a great first novel from Alex Martin. I wholeheartedly recommend it as an unputdownable story not to be missed. It gripped me from start to surprising finish. I couldn't guess what would happen at any point. It's got so much - heart-break, warmth, mystery, fun and adventure set in the beautiful wine making regions of France. The characters are memorable and stayed with me long after I finished reading the book. There are many sensitive issues dealt with too. It was refreshing to read a romantic mystery with so much more to it. The writing is beautiful and compelling. A treat for all readers. I have no hesitation in recommending highly it to everyone.

This was a fun read -- plus there is a bit of mystery and adventure. Well-defined characters. I feel like I've been on a mini-vacation to the vineyard regions of France, including some mountain driving and sampling of French cuisine. I didn't know that picking grapes was so labor-intensive, and have a greater respect for those who do that back-breaking work. // The writing was UK English, which I enjoy. Except for quotation marks switching from single to double, this book was well-edited. This author knows how to use commas (thank you Alex!), and it made for a very enjoyable read. This was Alex Martin's first book, and I see she has another recently published. I will look forward to reading it.

More About the Author

Life has been full to date.
Now I have a window, a pause, in which to explore my first passion - writing.
I have a shed in the garden where I can be found bashing both brain and keyboard. I'm attempting to express those thoughts and ideas that have been cooking since I was seven and learned to read.

You can keep up to date with my progress on

There was an old black and gold typewriter knocking about my childhood home. When I wasn't skinning my knees climbing trees or wandering aimlessly in the countryside with my dog and my dreams, I could be found, as now, typing away with imaginary friends whispering in my ear.
My first novel, The Twisted Vine, is based on a happy time picking grapes in France in the 1980s. I met some amazing people there but none as outrageous as those that sprang to life on my screen.
The next one, Daffodils, IS NOW LIVE ON AMAZON! and is based in Wiltshire, where I grew up. It attempts to portray how ordinary lives, and the rigid social order, were radically altered by the catalyst of the First World War.
The next one, as yet un-named, is a ghost story. I'm just listening to the whispers from the other side to get the full picture....
