Book Description

Trained from childhood, and equipped with alien technology, Reed Barowe ranks among the deadliest in the Serpican Police—a shadow agency created to enforce the fragile peace on a fractured Earth. A chance encounter in an isolated village will introduce Reed to a man who should be long dead, a tactical genius that might be mankind's best hope for freedom—or its greatest threat.

In a journey that will take them both to a fallen United States, and into the heart of a growing revolution, Reed must decide: will he turn from everything he knows to help a man he's been trained to kill?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Revenant Man definitely hits a lot of good SF buttons and the technology is totally believable as an extension of our own...And I do think that, if you like military SF, augmented-humanity SF, and post-apocalyptic SF, you'll be very interested in The Tyrant Strategy." - Josh Roseman, "Escape Pod" reviews blogger

"This was a good read and if you are into military style stories then this is for you." - ritareviews.net

4.0 out of 5 stars well written and well developed characters September 4, 2012

Mr. Gillespie, starts this story, getting your attention, and never lets it go. I found the characters very likeable, and I got attached to them quickly.

While this book can easily stand on its own, I'm excited to see what will happen in the next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Military Story February 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The Tyrant Strategy is a present tense book which is important because some people love book written in present tense while others hate them. What I mean is lines read like "He said whatever" and not "John said whatever" It is the here and now. For me I am a middle of the road on these sorts of books. Jonathan Gillespie did a decent job in this area. This was a good read and if you are into military style stories then this is for you. I am not that into military stories mainly because I grew up in that lifestyle and many times authors don't get it right. Mr. Gillespie did get it right and I was very entertained.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-defined post-apo science fiction December 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The Tyrant Strategy is a book written in present tense. Those of you who've read books in present tense might understand why that's important enough to start a review: present tense is hit or miss, present tense is damn hard to get right, and as a reader, present tense is either going to be your nemesis or your favorite thing ever. The style and delivery of a book is going to be with you for the entire thing.

That's why it's important to say The Tyrant Strategy got it right. Short sentences. Cutting style. A POV that sometimes makes me ache for first person, and sometimes makes me forget it isn't, only to be jerked back to reality by "he says". The theoretical camera watches the scenery with a terse eye that lingers just long enough to bring the picture of a war-torn, rampaged alien world... all the while capturing the distant resonance of familiarity underneath unfamiliar eyes. Many times, it's as close to the detective genre's often first person noir narrator as a novel written in third person present tense is going to get. Sometimes this dissonance holds me at arms length, and sometimes it's as intimate as a familiar present wrapped up in new paper.

The best thing I can think about The Tyrant Strategy is "if you liked Snow Crash, you'll probably like this." Perhaps this is just another book in a shift towards the present tense for science fiction, cyberpunk, forcing the thought on your mind (even if you don't consciously think it!) that this is now. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

So let me tell you a bit about the book, the plot.

The main character is Reed Barowe, and he's a Serpican--ranking among the members of an elite, shadowy, augmented police force who protect the fractured Earth.
