About the Author

Dan Moore has written about the Cardinals for nearly a decade and is a primary contributor to Viva El Birdos, the Cardinals blog on SB Nation. He lives in Springfield, Illinois.

More About the Author

Dan Moore is the managing editor of Viva El Birdos and tries, whenever possible, to shoehorn Jim Edmonds Hall of Fame advocacy into places where it doesn't belong. Did you know that between Jim Edmonds's 2000-2005 peak was among the best in the history of baseball?

This is one of the best books on the Cardinals I've ever read. Dan Moore's complete grasp on Cardinals history, from Pujols to the St. Louis Browns, is impressive, and he does a masterful job of making a book on statistics far from boring. This book is exciting and easy to understand, even for the casual fan, and really makes you appreciate the talent and tradition of this team. I would highly recommend this book for any Redbirds fan.

I bought this book for my father who consistently recites Bob Gibson statistics like the acts of Achilles. I managed to preview it before Christmas. Dan Moore did a great job. His prose animates dusty statistics and presents them in a more that palatable format. Other MLB teams could be so lucky as to have this man as their chronicler.

If you absolutely have to have the most comprehensive record book on the St Louis Cardinals, you've come to the right place; it's all in here. Even if you think you know everything there is to know about your favorite team and its players; think again. Example: Lou Brock's career stolen base total with the Cardinals - 888. Pretty interesting, eh?

I also found it interesting that the great Stan Musial's career batting average of .331 is only good for fifth-place, all-time for Redbird hitters. Hornsby, O'Neill, Mize and Medwick all hit for a higher average than Stan the Man. Of course, the greatest Cardinal of all-time leads the team in hits, games played, RBI, runs, home runs, triples, doubles and walks. Just to set the record straight, when Musial was a young player he did indeed have terrific speed (despite what the author thinks), as most of his 177 career triples were garnered before 1952. The 1942 team was known as the St Louis Swifties for a reason, and Musial chipped in with ten triples - the first of seven consecutive double-digit totals for three-base hits (He led the NL five times in triples between 1943 and 1951).

With that pressing matter clarified, now go ahead and enjoy this wonderful guide to everything there is to know about the St Louis Cardinals. You'll love it!
