Editorial Reviews

Review

The Ultimate Melonpool is more than a collection of comic strips. It's a journey of a young cartoonist from kindergarten to high school to college; a testimony that reflects the necessary determination and imagination to produce a hip, funny, piece of work. It's inspiring enough that I would recommend it to any aspiring cartoonist -- Jim Whiting, President/Southern California Cartoonists Society

From the Author

My favorite pastime as a kid was reading the comics every morning. Part of the joy of being a cartoonist is knowing that I may inspire the same joy in other kids and hopefully some adults too. In this book I have tried to share my love for laughter as well as offer some insight into a little spaceman I like to call Melonpool.

The space aliens have landed! But what a bunch of misfits they are! A star ship shaped like a duck crash lands in Junebug Country, Arkansas. Marooned on earth are a maniacal inventor, a telepathic dog, a 300 pound hamster, a spunky medical officer (who's not really a doctor) and, most of all, an inept but lovable t.v. addicted alien who wants to fulfill his dream of being the captain of a star ship, just like James T. Kirk!
This is the world of "Mayberry Melonpool," a comic strip universe created by Steve Troop. This book, "The Ultimate Melonpool," is a chronicle of how Steve created and developed his comic strip, and its current incarnation as a daily internet based publication.
For lovers of comics, Steve's world is a zany almagamation of the spirit of "Calvin & Hobbes," "Star Trek," and "Gilligan's Island," with a bit of "Far Side" and "Mr Boffo" style craziness thrown in. The art work is excellent, the characters well developed, and the gags are great!
I'd recommend "The Ultimate Melonpool" to everybody! (And let's get those syndicates to stand up and take notice and publish "The Adventures of Mayberry Melonpool" in the daily papers!) Also - - you can get the comic strip delivered to you via e-mail.

If you're a fan of comic strips, then you really should be let in on a little secret-the best comic strips today aren't in newspapers; they're online. One of the first, and greatest, online comics I read was Mayberry Melonpool. Troop's work will remind you of the heyday of most great comic strips; there is an aura of good feelings about these strips that is just infectuous, that will make you smile if you're not already aughing out loud at Steve's unabashed silliness. While this book contains a collection of great comics, by far the best part is following Steve Troops journey as his characters and strip evolve. If you enjoyed books like "Pre-History of the Far Side" or "The Essential Calvin and Hobbes," then you will want to check this tome out.

In a world of sub par performances, it's nice every once in a while to see an instant classic like the Melonpool saga. This book is not only a superb collection of some of the best cartoon art available, it's also a glimpse into the mind of one of the world's truly misunderstood geniuses. I KNOW Steve Troop. I've broken bread with him. I've bowled with Steve Troop. I've held covoluted discussions with Steve Troop. Those of you who were never as lucky might benefit from reading this book...

I met Steve at a Comic Convention in San Diego in 1998, he said he drew cartoons then sent them out to people on the internet. I had just got the internet and thought it would be a good idea to have a daily (Well, sometimes) cartoon when I log on every morning. It was a great idea. The comics in the newspaper have gone downhill ever since "The Far Side", "Calvin and Hobbes", and "Outland/Bloom County" left the paper. Soon, there were no clever comics (with th acception of: "Fox Trot" and "Peanuts") this became my favorite comic, newspaper or otherwise. With refferances to "Star Trek", "MST3K", "Star Wars", and many other Sci-Fi shows and movies. This book shows all the comics I missed over the years, and in the week I've had it, I've read it three times. I laugh and sometimes I scratch my head, thats what makes Steve's cartoons so great, you have to be smart to understand them. Oh, and if any newspaper people are reading this, those new comics, "Bobo's Progress" and "Duplex", don't stand a chance against Melonpool. -=Joe Stein=-

Many people review Mayberry Melonpool by saying it reminds them of this comic strip and this show..... I tend to review other things by saying they remind me of Mayberry Melonpool. Of course no one ever knows what I'm talking about, but that just gives me a chance to spread the word. I'm an aspiring cartoonist myself, and one of my greatest inspirations, alongside the greats that Steve quoted like Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side, etc. is a little strip called The Adventures of Mayberry Melonpool. Because no matter how many great things MM reminds me of, there really is nothing like it. This self proclaimed "hack cartoonist" has for years produced a strip of unparalleled humor, character and originality. He has taken a genre that has never seen the light of the funny pages (science fiction)and blended it with his own unique and awe inspiring style of humor, timing, plot and self parody. This book is a must have...and believe me, they're all gems.

If you miss Calvin & Hobbes or The Far Side, this is for you. If you like Saturday Night Live skits that poke fun at fans of Star Trek and Star Wars, this is for you. If you like Fox Trot, this is for you. If you like to read a fun strip that doesn't take itself too seriously, and at the same time can make you smile, maybe even laugh out loud, without belittling anyone else to do that, you'll like this book. I've been following Melonpool via the on-line strip and the one comic book that was published a few years ago, and I can safely say this book would be a fantastic addition to anyone's collection of quality humor and comic strip books. This stuff is good. Read it, and I am almost positive you will enjoy it.
