Book Description

July 1, 2009

Now, millions of Americans can beat constipation, without giving up gourmet food.

Millions of Americans have to pass up good food because of their bad problem - constipation. In 2004 alone, there were 41.3 million visits to physicians for digestive system symptoms.

The Constipation-Free Gourmet Cookbook is the kind of cookbook home chefs can count on every day to deliver regular meals with exotic variety and homey comforts. For the family cook, it has the main courses, sides, and deserts that will keep everyone moving: pasta puttanesca on Monday, pizza with shrimp on Tuesday, and pork chops on Thursday. The Constipation-Free Gourmet Cookbook is the go-to cookbook for anyone who wants the pleasure of a great meal without worrying about the side effects.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Diners of all stripes and evacuation schedules will find Svetcov's lighthearted collection of 125 colon-cleansing dishes informative and effective. The usual suspects (coffee, bran muffins, black bean and corn salad) are on display, but even veteran commode commandos will be surprised at some of Svetcov's suggestions, including flourless chocolate cake with raspberries, bourbon truffles (she insists that chocolate has laxative properties) and yogurt smoothies that get a boost of fiber from supplements and fresh fruit. Virtually all her dishes are flavorful and simple--wheat germ, flax meal and whole wheat pastry flour are about as outré as she gets-and the emphasis is on flavor rather than fiber content (to that end, Svetcov rates her recipes on a 10-point scale, ten being a dish best consumed within sprinting distance of a restroom). A collection of emergency heavy hitters includes jump-starters like prunes with warm brandy. Conversely, those who might have overdone it will appreciate Svetcov's recommendations for slowing things down, such as baked potato with olive oil or matzo pancakes.

Review

I know. A cookbook about constipation sounds crazy, but Health's senior food editor, Frances Largeman-Roth, wrote a prologue to Danielle's book, so I flipped through it. As I read recipes for bourbon truffles, Gorgonzola-stuffed dried fig salad, chorizo and chickpea stew, and fruit compotes with yogurt, I forgot all about crazy. I was thinking yum. 5.0 out of 5 stars So much more than a cookbook July 12, 2009
Format:Paperback
I love this cookbook, because it is so much more than just recipes. The author has included very interesting facts and explanations about the key ingredients that she uses. It is really a brief encyclopedia of digestive information. I've never before thumbed through a cookbook skimming recipes and devouring facts and information instead! I can't wait to try some recipes out with my backed up family and I can think of a few select people who need to make this book required reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Going June 30, 2009
Format:Paperback
First, I must disclose that I'm the author's brother....so realize the bias.

That being said, the recipes are really quite good. I love to bake and had a chance to test some of the more decadent recipes (my personal favorites) and found that this is a book that is first about good food that incidentally makes the "going" easy.

If you like food, the recipes in this book are for you. If you like "going", that's just a bonus. On top of this, the writing is fun and witty and who can fault a book that recommends that you always carry around a 3 ounce bar of dark chocolate - for emergencies?

My favorite recipe is on page 192 - Flourless Chocolate Cake with Raspberries (yes, I like chocolate). I hope others who comment will mention their favorite recipe in their post.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Recipes, Fun Read! August 24, 2009
Format:Paperback
I'll admit, I don't love to cook. But I love to read cookbooks--and this one is so clever and well done. Not only are the recipes yummy-sounding and inspiring (not to mention functional) but the book is filled with funny and informative tidbits that really give it personality. A great gift for a cook who appreciates the benefits of fiber and witty writing.
