I'm a great fan of journal writing and hoped The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath would provide a clear picture of her life. It's her journal, and I'm sure it served her purposes, but it wasn't what I expected. I'd call it more of a "writer's workbook." There are many pages of descriptions of things (e.g., what's on the dining room table) and people (appearance more than character). The descriptions often consist of sentence fragments and long lists of adjectives. The journal jumped from her first meeting with Ted Hughes to their life after marriage with everything in between omitted. It ended abruptly after the death of her neighbor Percy Key in 1962. There's something wrong with desecrating someone else's personal journal. Can it accurately be called "unabridged?" The journal is strangely short on introspection with the exception of the author's massive struggle with "writer's block" that lasted for years and the insights she gained from visits with her psychiatrist Ruth Barnhouse. Sylvia was plagued with sinusitis which she said "plunges me into manic depression." She experienced debilitating fatigue too frequently for a woman her age; it was likely a symptom of her depression. I did learn quite a bit about her: she loved being married to a well-known poet; she wanted to be a wife and a mother; she had a relentless passion for writing; she suffered with impaired mental health for years. Although the many pages of writing practice weren't particularly interesting for me, I bookmarked more passages from this book than from all of my others. The most poignant for me: "Felt a joy yesterday, soon clouded."

A fantastic read & reread for those who know who Sylvia Plath is & those who don't. One of our greatest poets-a look into the mind of Sylvia Plath & some insight on her early demise. Plaqued by depression this is a facinating book you'll want to have as you'll read it more than once! Married to Ted Hughes another of our finest writers, this book lets you hear in Sylvias own words what she endured as an artist torchured by mental illness. A fabulous read!

While Sylvia Plath is known for the way she passed away, head in the oven for those who do not know, the way she lived her life is reflected here, in her writings. They are deep and moving, they also make you want to sit down for hours and write out your own musings of the world and the people around you. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in Mrs. Plath, she is intelligent, insightful, witty and even her depressed moments teach you something about the world. A must read!
