Yo-Yo Ma has given us a treasure here that will appeal to young and old alike. Throughout the suites, Ma gives us rapturous playing that will forever haunt your memory after having heard it. While Bach has given us lots of great music, his solo pieces have an extra-special quality. This CD features some of his most successful solo works--the cello suites.

The cello suites have a real intimacy and depth. The cello, by far my favorite string instrument, has a richness that is all its own. While we rarely hear it all by itself, the result here is one that is indescribable. The movements of the suites range from the lively Preludes, Courantes, and Gigues and the calm, relaxing Allemandes and Sarabande. Yo-Yo Ma's playing is sonorous, pulling out the wonderful detail. The recording quality is great - no drawbacks here.

Perhaps the biggest thing that makes this recording such a win is the richness and depth in Ma's playing. He has a very special way of unveiling the soul the Bach expressed in the suites. His tone allows him to delve into the music, pulling out wonderful bits of real meaning that are a joy to listen to. Listening to this recording makes me want to curl up in a comfy chair (with a cup of tea, if it's a cold day), and just absorb the beauty of the music. There's something very nostalgic about it, actually, that sends one into deep thought. But things never become ponderous. Instead, everything is kept in control, while still being very musical and interesting, pretty much the dream performance you want in the suites. This kind of playing makes this album one that deserves serious attention.

Buy this CD.

Yo-yo Ma's playing of these pieces is soulful, articulate and just beautiful. This is most definitely the finest captured performance of the Cello Suites.

(This review is for the audiophiles out there)

BUT.....it is unfortunately not the best recording. The subtleties of the recording environment are captured here, the attack and decay are life-like and the sound is warm and full. To undermine all that, there is a pronounced buzz audible in the tracks.
I had played this from multiple sources, NAD universal disc player, PS Audio transport and finally McIntosh transport and on multiple DAC/Pre/Amp and speaker combinations to eliminate any of my equipment as a source of noise. As I moved up the chain in component quality and resolution, it became more and more pronounced. With my McIntosh setup, in conjunction with Magnepan 3.6R's, it became nearly unbearable to listen to. All you can focus attention on is the buzz, much more apparent in the left channel, but present in both.

I will continue to search for a perfect recording of the Cello Suites, as they are amazing pieces of music, it is unfortunate that this disc suffers these flaws, as the actual playing was astounding.

For those who are not bitten by the audio nerd bug, and have standard stereo systems with normal resolutions, it will unlikely be a problem.

Is Ma the finest cellist of all time? Probably not, but he's close.
Are these the ultimate Bach Cello Suites? Probably not, but they're close.
Is this gorgeous, soulful music? Absotively.

I'm surprised to see some folks here knocking these recordings, but then some are offended by Ma's continuing international success, for various reasons. I applaud him for it, personally. Any classical musician who can bring new fans to the fold is just fine with me, and when they do it with this much feeling and humility, I say you go, YoYo!

These are not the most "individual" CS, or even close to the "wildest". But they are gorgeous at many many points. There are so many fine recordings of these; Casals and Gendron jump to mind, but there are at least a dozen other truly sweet versions. Yet I love these as much as any of those because Ma keeps them all so simple and pure. I feel quite sure JS himself would love these. Ma coaxes lush tone from his instrument but one never gets the feeling he's showing it or his technique off at all; he's here to do justice to Bach's musical intentions, and that he certainly does.

I played the cello briefly in grade 7, and of course our teacher would say, "Play it with feeling!" But as a kid it's hard to know what that really means. To those who are wondering, I say listen to this version of the Prelude to the 2nd in D Minor. So very simple, so very understated. Not at all difficult; even a beginner could play this. But listen to how gently Ma pulls those notes from the wood and steel. Feel the softly singing vibrato, the way he takes a note and brings it to life with just a subtle wring of the wrist and finger.

This two disc set of the complete Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites is breathtaking. This was a gift to my husband, who adores his playing. I have a recording of the earlier Pablo Casals's First Three Suites, and while it is good, Yo Yo Ma brings to these suites a fire and passion that far surpasses any other cellist I've heard. These suites are all the more demanding because there is no other instrument to carry part of the load. But Yo Yo Ma bring Bach to life like a flaming torch which lights the listener's heart.
