5.0 out of 5 stars Ahh So Satisfying!, December 17, 2005
By
This review is from: The Unbeatable Bread (Hardcover)
This book is wonderful in every respect. Once I read it to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders and the room was so quiet you could've heard a pin drop! It's lyrical spiritual entertaining AND the man bakes bread.. he loves it!! and so does everyone else!! Illustrates many principles we could all learn from...the least of which is the joy of sharing...especially yummies from the kitchen. Beautiful inside and out ~ a celebration ~ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it!, September 8, 2005
This review is from: The Unbeatable Bread (Hardcover)
We loved this book! I'm somewhat ashamed to say that I had never had the courage to bake yeast bread before this book, even knowing that it's supposed to be a wonderful, almost spiritual, soul-enriching experience... This book changed my mind and gave me the confidence to proceed beyond zucchini bread and muffins. Uncle Jon's faith in the pleasures of baking one more loaf - even though, as his wife points out, their kitchen is filled to the brim with baked goods and there's no one around to eat any of them - as well as the marvelous rich lifelike illustrations, got me straight into the kitchen. Baking bread is worth it all on its own; the question of whether there's anyone around to eat is strictly a moot point. And lo and behold, as the story goes on, the enticing smell of the baking bread does wake up people and animals who come sleepily wandering into Uncle Jon's kitchen from all around the countryside. My daughter and I hummed and sang as we kneaded and waiting, punched down and braided, and (of course) ate our delicous bread. This is a wonderful addition to any family's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully, Deliciously Wonderful!!, July 21, 2010
This review is from: The Unbeatable Bread (Hardcover)
Uncle Jon wakes up one winter morning and decides to make some bread. But not just any bread... an unbeatable bread. So he mixes in the yellow of the morning sun and a whistle of the wind. And as the scents of his fabulously unbeatable bread linger to his neighbors all around him, they come running for a bite of his bread.

This book, is written in a lyrical style that will draw in young readers. The imagery is fabulous, and... as if that weren't enough, the illustrations are simply divine.

I give this book an A++ and highly recommend it for any home library.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!, September 15, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Unbeatable Bread (Hardcover)
What an enjoyable book! My son brought this book home from the school library and we have read it everynight. He has to take it back tommrow so I have come online to buy it. What is great about this book is, the illistrations, the lyrical tone, the fantastic message of finding joy out of sharing. And what I love about this book is that it captured my sons attention from start to finish. He is developmentally delayed and he has a hard time keeping up with stories when read too. But not this book, he sayed intently focused on the story. And when it was done, he dug his apron out of his toy box and started "baking" his own unbeatable bread. AWESOME BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for All!, December 14, 2011
This review is from: The Unbeatable Bread (Hardcover)
A truly wonderful book for kids, with beautiful language and exuberant illustrations! Worlds away from the standard subjects entertained by most kids books, Hoopes thrills with her tale of a man who wakes seized by the urge to bake, and Brad Sneed's loopy drawings are the perfect accompaniment. The story has the crisp ring of the real, and challenges young listeners on many different levels at once. Recommended without reservation.
