5.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected... December 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
but I was very happy with what I got. I'm not sure what exactly I thought this one would be, but it was very, very good. I think I was expecting more of a writing how-to and got an engaging tale in the process. Really enjoyed this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Heartwarming Story of Determination and Forgiveness September 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Not what I expected. At first glance, I thought this was a non-fiction book about how to write a novel. I was pleasantly surprised to read a sweet story of a mother and daughter's relationship, and the daughter's trials of becoming a published novelist.

This novella opens with Jordyn Simmons arguing with her mother, Debra, over Jordyn's decision to move to Florida with her son's father, Tyler. Debra is concerned her daughter is sacrificing her independence to move with her non-Jewish boyfriend, with no plans of marriage.

Other than being on the outs with her mother, Jordyn is on top of the world. She is happily in love with a wonderful boyfriend, who is supportive of her aspirations to become a best-selling author. Together, they have a beautiful family with their son. She works as a paralegal, at Tyler's firm. Her sister, Naomi, who is a dentist, also lives in Florida.

Ms. Bridgeton takes us through both Jordyn and Dabra's lives from both ladies' points of view. She interweaves these two stories beautifully.

Jordyn finally completes her novel, then goes through the struggles of finding an agent or publisher to read her manuscript. The author leads us on a tour of the fascinating world of the publishing industry, including the dreaded 'slush pile', a wonderful testament to writers to never give up on their dreams.

I felt for Debra when she lost her job. She's falsely accused, and then they try to cut her off with a small severance package, nine days out from a five year award she's earned. She refuses to sign anything until after she speaks with her attorney. He comes through for her, and the company agrees to settle in her favor.

Debra struggles emotionally after working so many years as a single mother of two, to end up being fired. At her age, it is difficult to find another job. A publisher, who seems to have a bad attitude discovers her reading in a coffee shop. He strikes up a conversation with her. She agrees to work for him as an assistant to his prized editor, who is on maternity leave.

Debra proves to be an asset to the publishing house, convincing them to sponsor a writing contest, hoping to discover 'the next big talent'. She has no clue her daughter has entered her manuscript to the contest, as she hasn't spoken with her in over two years, until it comes across her desk. She is concerned how this may look to her boss, whom she's come to respect, as well as hoping it may help to restore her rocky relationship with her daughter.

My overall conclusion: The Undiscovered Novelist is a heartwarming story of determination to succeed and forgiveness. The characters are authentic, and make the reader care about their individual stories. I recommend this story to readers, as well as aspiring authors. I look forward to reading her novel
Next Year in Israel, which is the story Jordyn submits to the contest.
I give this story five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Undiscovered Novelist - 3.5 stars! September 18, 2012
By Lisa
Format:Kindle Edition
The first word that comes to mind regarding The Undiscovered Novelist is... cute. It was a short, quick read basically about the efforts of a writer to get her first novel published. As a huge supporter of Indie authors, it was very interesting for me to see the behind-the-scenes aspect of a writer trying to get their book published.

The characters were entertaining and the storyline was enjoyable. I know sometimes mothers (and mothers-in-law) can be tough to deal with, so I think most people can relate to this subject. ;)

I did feel as though things fell into place a little TOO conveniently. It was also extremely predictable. As well, as it ended I thought I was missing a chapter, as it was so abrupt. I'm assuming as a novella the author was trying to keep it short and sweet, so I can appreciate that. I just felt it needed a bit more to tie it all together.

I would recommend this book to other readers out there that enjoy work from Indie authors like I do. It's eye-opening to see it from their perspective. I'm definitely looking forward to more from Sarah in the future!
