5.0 out of 5 stars Still one of the best dramas on network television
For months it wasn't clear if CBS would bring back The Unit after its third season. It's an atypical show in this era of reality tv and the more popular and esoteric fare like Lost and Heroes. The Unit, after all, when you get right down to it, is a series about war produced in a time of war. And the lack of success films about Iraq and Afghanistan have had (Redacted...

3.0 out of 5 stars 3'rd Season - not up to the standard
The Unit during the first season was an excellent series. Each episode had two action packed operations going on at a time. Everything looked believable and there was enough personal dynamic included to make the team members human.

The second season was nearly as good. The season end episode had me on the edge of my seat....but at the same time wondering...

For months it wasn't clear if CBS would bring back The Unit after its third season. It's an atypical show in this era of reality tv and the more popular and esoteric fare like Lost and Heroes. The Unit, after all, when you get right down to it, is a series about war produced in a time of war. And the lack of success films about Iraq and Afghanistan have had (Redacted? Stop-Loss?) on the big screen on some level points to the reluctance of the public to yet engage in depictions about this war. Of course, many of the movies haven't been that good to begin with...Nonetheless, here's The Unit, whose text is ultimately about the war on terror. And yes, one may disagree with its generally pro-war on terror perspective, or at the least question it. That said, when Mamet and company directly address this war, as they do in the back-to-back episodes "5 Brothers" and "Play 16," the end result is two of the most heart-wrenching hours of television to have been broadcast last year. Mamet has never shied away from the moral and ethical issues war and soldiering present--check out his underappreciated Spartan with Val Kilmer; and while there is never any doubt that his team of warriors are heroes, he is not afraid to show dramatically the price that comes with that heroism. This price is show to devastating effect in these two particular episodes. For this reason alone, this box-set is worth purchasing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, May 19, 2008
This review is from: The Unit Season 3 (Amazon Instant Video)
After having been in combat (2 yrs) and later serving in a SWAT team for 7 yrs, I can confidently say that this series rings true with reference to technical and tactical concepts. My wife says that the wives portrayed aren't too far off the mark concerning the "war at home" either.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3'rd Season - not up to the standard, September 5, 2008
The Unit during the first season was an excellent series. Each episode had two action packed operations going on at a time. Everything looked believable and there was enough personal dynamic included to make the team members human.

The second season was nearly as good. The season end episode had me on the edge of my seat....but at the same time wondering how the series could continue with the corner they had been written into.

The third season opening episode answers the questions of the second season finale and reunites the unit....although one would have to suspend bits of reality to swallow the outcome. The rest of season three seems to play more like a soap opera than a drama about an elite military team. The writing and story lines were much weaker than the first two seasons.

I'm still a fan....but for me to continue to watch the series it will have to return to it's roots of the first and second season.

In a world saturated with low budget reality shows and annoying sitcoms it's nice to have a few great shows still on the air. This is one of them - production value is stellar, acting is superb and the storyline is always compelling. The Unit is the definition of "must see tv"

The Unit had a tough third season due to the writers strike and this season is missing something like 3 episodes. But the strike behind us, the season was a good one. I would still put season 2 as the best of the three, but season 2 had some great individual episodes. Jonas's character really thrives and we find out alot more about him than before. Plus, Tom Ryan will get himself into to trouble by the end of the season, so look out an make sure you watch the 4th season opener only on CBS!

3.0 out of 5 stars Only eleven episodes for $27.99 ???, November 2, 2008

I absolutely love this show and own the Season 1,2,and 3 but Season 3 was very disappointing. The season starts out with a bang, but slowly slips downhill and no real season grand finale. And with only 11 episodes for $27.99, I think this is a total rip-off for the loyal fans of the Unit! WHAT - is Hollywood running out of money ???

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Television Show, October 24, 2009
The Unit is, in my family's opinion, the best television show ever put on television. The characters are so multidimensional. It is their intelligence and strengths that appeal to us so much. Each character is amazing by him or herself, but combined, they are incredible.
Truthfully, this show is so good, you forget you are watching a television series and not just a nice long movie. You care about the characters, you are riveted by the scripts and left craving for many more episodes when you are done.
Imagine strong men who speak multiple languages, can converse on any subject, don't use obscenities, and aren't afraid to be gentle when necessary. Then imagine the women in their lives who give as much as their soldiers. Women who are strong and caring. Then combine them with true to live plots and filming so good it is unexpected in a television show. Imagine all that and you have the unit.
I wish any station would pick them up again. They would add thousands of new viewers, my family at the forefront. Wish I could give it 20 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best shows on TV today, April 21, 2009
This show is excellent. I have watched from the beginning, and it never disappoints. Even a weak season is better than most other shows. Technically accurate, tense suspense and drama, great ensemble acting, and doesn't shy away from some of the moral dilemmas that occur no matter how well you do your job. Sometimes there is a cost.
I'd recommend this show to anyone who loves a great story with excellent scripts and tight acting. The team is amazing. You won't be disappointed.
