Product Description

Amazon.com

Among the bossa nova masters, Antonio Carlos Jobim's particular gifts included composition, arrangements, and his literal invention of the bossa nova form back in the 1950s. This giant had a long and illustrious career before passing in 1994, and his twilight years saw him still at the height of his powers. Here in 1987 with his final working band, which includes cellist Jacques Morelenbaum and singers Paula Morelenbaum and Danilo Caymmi, Jobim does a live-in-the-studio recording of many of his classics as well as few previously unrecorded tunes. While his vocals have never been a strong point, he gives soulful performances of several songs. His arrangements, on the other hand, are as poignant as you'd expect from master working with friends in the comfort of his home studio. There are many great recordings of Antonio Carlos Jobim, and this isn't the first to go to, but previously unreleased music from the maestro is always worth a look. Never more so than here. --Tad Hendrickson

There are two titles available with the very same material. This 'Unknown Jobim' is the American issue of 'Inedito' as issued originally in Brazil. Both are available here@Amazon and the quality is the same, so check prices for your convenience.

Happens that Jobim recorded a two-set album exclusively to be distributed as a gift by a Brazilian corporation. What an act!

Needless to say this double set was an object of high desire by all of his fans in Brazil for many years.

This is the double CD issue of that album which contains 24 standards composed by Tom Jobim. That's the reason why its title is 'Inedito', meaning 'unissued'.

The title 'Unknown' is not appropriate because all material is quite known in Brazil or even in the USA just with new renditions by Jobim himself with a small group.

No matter, it is a very great album though not Jobim's top of the top.

An old school fan of The Maestro, Ive recently reconnected /rekindled my ACJ mania of my high school yrs. An exchange student from Brazil was one of my HS buds and we discussed and enjoyed this stuff decades ago. In memory of Keeko (my bud) I searched and found this gem. " Chege De Saudade" transports me from my Atlanta metro abode to Ipanema Beach and I can see my lovely spouse in knee deep water ,with the other beauties..as the maestro raises his hands and says..Um !dos! tres!...and the music lifts me and flies us away on a South Atlantic breeze, the joy of carnival...the energy, the color and all the resplendent imagery of Brazil...it all passes before my eyes and I can imagine.

A must for all ACJ fans old n young.....It fills your senses and remains with you for days n nights. I just played 2 ballgames at 3rd base and it followed me , haunted and moved me beyond myself and persisted..I pushed it away and it hung on and said....No!!!!!

Enjoy!

Jobim made this intimate recording together with his family. Among all his albums he liked this one the most: they had enough money for the recording to realize all that he wanted. The first half of the CD is happy, the second a bit more melancholic. Once you start to listen this album you can't get the music out oy your had, it takes you in right away. The melody is subtle, the rhythm is pulsating. The female chorus is like a never-ending swell. A must for Jobim fans.

A private album...Who ever heard of such a thing? And yet when I read in the Economist online that this album existed, was finally available to the public, and even better was a masterpiece, I was intrigued. The story is that this album is the fruit of a private commission by the Odebrecht Corporation to be produced in an extremely limited edition then distributed as Christmas gifts to a favored few. So it really was unavailable to the general public for quite some time until finally released in Brazil only in limited edition by the corporation. Now, thanks to Jobim Biscoito Fino under arrangements with DRG records this CD has been released in America and apparently has been available now for five years.
Was it worth the anticipation generated by the hype? Well, I wasn't quite prepared for all of the vocals, most of my experience with Antonio Carlos Jobim's music has been on the instrumental side. But after repeated listens, I was brought around by the sheer beauty of the music and the quality of the recording.
Unknown starts off reassuringly enough with an excellent instrumental version of the timeless Wave. Then it slides gently into the vocal portion with a fine rendition of Chega de Saudade, another Bossa Nova standard. From that point, I was on a journey between the familiar and the unfamiliar. Here's what I like best: Retrato Em Branco e Preto; the delicate Modinha of Heitor Villa-Lobos; Jobim's own Modinha; the stunning, nearly mystical Canta, Canta Mais; the delightful Eu Nao Existo Sem Voce; Por Causa de Voce; the soothing duet Falando de Amor; the soaring Estrada do Sol; the classic Samba de Uma Nota So; the internationally famous Desfinado; and the warm A Felicidade which concludes the recording.

if you're a Jobim fan this is a must. Hypnotic, gorgeous arrangements features not only antonio carlos jobim but many others, family included. I have about 6 jobim cds, all are wonderful, but this one is my most treasured. Very special collaboration. Includes a booklet with lyrics in his language. Get this one! It's a treasure.
