Book Description

It isn’t every day that one meets a goddess, let alone a Matrika or being that presides over the sounds of language. It is said such deities can bring us complete liberation. Will that prove true for a struggling vocalist named Wrenne when a mysterious woman appears and offers to help her find her True Voice? This beguiling and eccentric teacher guides us all on a deep and powerful journey through 10 mystical gates of sound, sharing great insights, secrets, and profound wisdom about the power of letters, words, and our very own voice to transform the world around us. This isn’t standard knowledge; this is a gift for our times, taking the reader into the very heart of sonic revelations.

Editorial Reviews

"As I was reading The Unknown Mother, I wondered how many are even ready for a book of this magnitude....The power of sound and speech has the ability to heal, to shape destinies and to take us to a higher level. Our own repressed emotions block our expression and Dielle's magical tale takes us on a journey to free ourselves."  - Brenda Seright Williams, Sophie Magazine, Dec. 2012

Dielle Ciesco has magically tapped into the sacred shamanic voice that resides deep in the heart of all creation. Matrina, the Unknown Mother, reminds us that sound and words have the power to heal what ails humanity when we are willing to surrender to the Great Mystery. As the creator of Shamanic Breathwork Journeys, I believe that Matrina must have been whispering her wisdom in my ears these many years while I slept! --Linda Star Wolf

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful words, and beyond words January 16, 2013
Dielle Ciesco has written a marvelous book on a hugely important (but often overlooked) issue -- the power of sound, words, our voice. It is filled with wit, wisdom, and heart. As someone who used to stutter and is challenged to find my voice and convey my message, I am so moved with what she has done here. She has opened up the beauty of our voice, and placed it in a far broader perspective, that of the spiritual. Many do not realize the link between sound and Spirit, and Ciesco does that superbly. She writes, "Are we in harmony with the Great Sound? Do we breed forgiveness or hatred with the words we speak? Do we give form to self-pity and blame or to maturity and wisdom? Do we relinquish our masterpiece to our reasoning minds, ignoring the awkward thud that deflates our spirit? Do we allow the voices of others to influence our melody with fear or with hope? What are the consequences to our choices? Someone is always listening. What are you saying?"

The book is fiction and kind of reminiscent of Richard Bach's Illusions, which is also about an eccentric mentor and filled with deep truth. As I was reading it, I found myself trying out the experiences of the central character, as if the book was a non-fiction manual. I love the idea that "language is a form of food and that we're feeding all day long, every day of the week." This book has really opened my eyes to the effect that sound has in my environment, even the sound of my own thoughts, and on my experience of reality. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Walk with the Goddess of Sound January 11, 2013
This author presents a magical story, with a lively goddess, the Unknown Mother, Matrina. She shows up to teach a vocalist (and the reader) about the power of sound. She details many facts about the energy of the throat chakra, as well as the energy of letters, words, and our unique, individual voices. More importantly, Matrina, the servant of Sacred Sound, challenges each of us to grow in our awareness of the spiritual impact of every utterance we make.
In addition to this delightful goddess scenario, there are many practical tips and exercises for one to better utilize this healing modality. The benefits of chanting, toning and using our own inner knowing are simply amazing - not to mention the power in silence. One sentence at the end of the book sums it up for me: "Sound is a palace in which God resides." Wow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Wisdom of Listening to your WORDS February 14, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The next book in my eclectic pile was by a local author, Dielle Ciesco. I actually had the opportunity to read a preliminary chapter of The Unknown Mother: A Magical Walk with the Goddess of Sound and anxiously awaited the opportunity to read the entire book. Oh, the amazing lessons it holds and the perfect timing in our universe for its release. As we turned into 2013, we walked fully into the consciousness of communication and the importance of hearing the words we speak every day, in all situations, to everyone we come in contact with.

As we follow Spiritual Guide Matrina leads Ciesco, our story teller and at times reluctant and rebellious student, through a new consciousness of our words and all vocal sounds we utter, in addition to listening to the sounds of the world around us. This title, sat me up a bit straighter in listening to my personal vocabulary, causing me to tune in with a new ear. As the tale brings to light, "...there's no single correct method that's right all the time. The `best' method is the one that honors your intuition." My intuition has been to walk as gently as I can on Earth Mother, honoring all that I come in contact with and be positive and gentle to the extent I can without dishonoring my core. I look more closely and that core these days. "The mother explained to her open-mouthed daughter that the voice is known as Echo, but truly it is the Voice of life. `Life is a mirror of our thoughts words and deeds. If you want to have a friend, be one. If you want compassion, give it. If you desire others to be patient and respectful of you, give your patience and respect to them. This is the law.'"

As soon as I finished reading my copy, I purchased five more to gift to friends!

4.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected Journey June 19, 2013
This book was fascinating. I had no idea there was so much to know and glean from sound.
Dielle takes us on a journey guided by the all-knowing Matrina, a journey to heal and to understand.
At first it's an introduction to sounds, voice and words. During the beginning of the book I found myself thinking back to the birth of my second son. I remember leaning against my bedroom wall and swaying through a contraction and making a deep, low moan. My midwife said: "That is a very helpful, healing sound." After reading The Unknown Mother, I have a much better comprehension of what she meant.
Matrina's teaching goes deeper as the book progresses and the point becomes to open up to a way of being in the world that uses our gifts help us awaken.
The format is fun: a guidebook told in novel form with clever banter woven in with life-changing lessons.
I very much enjoyed this window into Dielle's experience and wisdom.

4.0 out of 5 stars The House You Live In May 30, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
"The words you speak become the house you live in."

Hafiz, the fourteenth century Persian mystic and poet spoke these words centuries ago and Dielle Ciesco illuminates them beautifully in her book, The Unknown Mother. Not only is this a wonderful book for people who use their voice as singers and vocalists, but for all of us who wish you speak our truths and find our authentic voice.

It's been said that sometimes fiction is the best way to tell the truth and Ciesco has told the truth in this imaginative novel. It moves along nicely and held my interest through to the end. I copied much of it into my journal and am utilizing many of the practices she describes for finding and authenticating my voice as a writer.

Thank you, Dielle Ciesco for adding to the great river of voices speaking truth in our troubled world.
