Book Description

October 10, 2011
At some point in their life, most Christians have walked through the doors of their church on Sunday morning and wondered what it really means to live a Christian life. Unfortunately, few ever do more than warm a pew on Sunday and try to be a "good person" throughout the week. But the reality is...

Jesus called us to change the world... starting with 'the least of these.'

Dan King, popular blogger and founder of BibleDude.net, wrestled for several years with this idea of what it means to serve like Jesus did. That is, until he started researching the topic of poverty and what the Christian response to it looks like. One little writing project triggered a series of events, like dominoes, that eventually led him on an unlikely trip to Africa. It was a trip that would change things forever.

Follow Dan's journey not only on a poverty-fighting trip through Africa, but also on the journey of discovery as the mission trip helps him find purpose and meaning in his Christian walk.

In addition to the stories of people and experiences on that trip to Africa, the book is full of practical ideas and exercises that will challenge you discover world-changing passion whether it takes you half-way around the world or keeps you right at home in your own backyard.

Where you go isn't the important thing, but what you do with the gift you've been given is.

You have a unique gift, and God intends for you to use it to build His Kingdom. You can join Dan in this incredible journey today and discover a sense of purpose that will ignite your Christian faith in ways you've never expected!

Editorial Reviews

Review

"What glows from this book is how King experiences the "activation" of his faith. But it's a smart and educated activation - he doesn't rush in to do something but instead works with people more experienced and knowledgeable. In other words, he learns."
- Glynn Young, Author of Dancing Priest, A Novel

"What I discovered in this book is not so much a "how-to" manual. Not so much a "this is the way you become a missionary" story. This is no step-by-step guide to emerging from the pew. The Unlikely Missionary is a beautiful tale of obedience and courage in being faithful to where God calls in each moment."
- Laura Boggess, Special Projects Editor, TheHighCalling.org

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring Book December 6, 2011

Dan King is very transparent and genuine in this book. His life was dramatically changed when he was called to action. After experiencing first hand the poverty that exist in Africa, King could not sit by and live his life ignoring the need. He does not play himself out to be a superhero, but makes it very clear that he is just a regular guy with normal struggles that strives to make the world a better place for those around him.

At the end of each chapter, King provides practical steps the reader can take to begin conversations and ways to become involved in making a difference.

The book is an easy read and very inspiring.

I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Can Make a Difference! October 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I stumbled upon Dan King (@bibledude) in the forums of the Tentblogger community. Dan's first e-book, The Unlikely Missionary, is a great read and is a great introduction to life on the mission field for someone who has never been on the mission field before.

Jumping over to the book site, I read about his experiences as first-time missionary and the work that God did on his heart. The Unlikely Missionary is a story-driven, first-person narrative outlining his first mission trip outside the United States. He partnered with the Five Talents organization which works to provide micro-financing loans for underdeveloped regions in order for people to obtain a better way of life.

As Dan described his journey across the ocean to Kenya, I began to remember so vividly my own experiences in that country. The bumpy roads, the stench of stale air and other smells you did not even know existed, and the faces of people who traveled hours, even days, to hear messages of hope.

This book is great for anyone who wants to know what a mission trip looks and feels like without ever leaving the comforts of home. Dan addresses:

Heart Attitude - your own and those who you will meet
Culture Shock - you think you are prepared...and then...you realize you are not
Hope - you can't fix everything, but you can provide hope
Engagement - stories of triumph and struggle...even your own
Action - each chapter provides a call to action for your own personal development

I would recommend this book to mission agencies as well as church staff's who are looking to take a teams overseas. The narrative is geared towards Africa; however, it is not so much the place as it is what it does in your own heart. It is a quick read, and the questions at the end of each chapter are ideal for a small group discussion or team preparation. I hope that you will check out this great resource, and stop by Dan's blog for more stories.

I really enjoyed this book of Dan's transformation. He told it straight, shared his very big heart, and urged me to rethink how I look at my life as a Christian. If you're looking for a fairly quick, inspirational read, pick up this book.
