Editorial Reviews

A & E goes behind the scenes for a rough-and-tumble look at the people and history behind today's most flamboyant sport-pro wrestling. In addition to interviews with Jesse the Body Ventura, Hulk Hogan, Andr+ª the Giant and many others, you'll be treated to clips of some of the sport's earliest stars. 1998/color-b&w/100 min/NR.

Customer Reviews

If you enjoy wrestling then i'd recommend this dvd.

The footage and topics of yesteryear are much more fascinating to me now, and the footage of "modern day" wrestling is now a source of heart warming nostalgia.

All in, a well balanced DVD with enough in it for you to go back and watch it several times.

The title doesn't give too much away and sells this DVD short. This is an excellent walkthrough for anyone interested in seeing why the wrestling business is how it is today. It concentrates on the last 100yrs. It is suitable for all ages and is a complete history lesson. It is packed with video footage and interviews from the stars of yesterday and today. There is no bias towards any one of todays "BIG 2". The trivia test is in stages, with classy sound effects for right and wrong answers. (Shame you dont get anything for answering all the questions correctly.) My wife hates me watching wrestling and even she thought the DVD was good value and informative. All in, a well balanced DVD with enough in it for you to go back and watch it several times. I would liked to have seen a bit more about the managers/women {Sunny}but that doesn't affect the great production, editing and storyline. I've got to thank Amazon for stocking it.

From the wrestling legends, to the their gimmicks and matches, this documentary shows it all. Just be prepared to spend a couple hours in front of the old tube... You can find all of your old favorites from Lou Thesz to Andre the Giant, to Hulk Hogan, and more! I reccomend this movie to any real hardcore wrestling fan who wants to know more about true Sports Entertainment.

I saw this premiere on A&E the night before the April 27, 1998, WWF Raw is War/War Zone show from Hampton, Virginia (which I attended). That date is very significant because it was the moment, in my opinion, that the WWF started to soar in mainstream popularity once again.
This documentary premiered the night before that fateful show. It served as a prelude of what was to come over the next couple of years. Basically, it is a pretty-much thorough history of professional wrestling in the United States, from Frank Gotch and George Hackenschmidt to Shawn Michaels and Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Although the most recent stuff that is covered is from October 1997 - just before Bill Goldberg started his meteoric rise to fame and right before the double-cross in Montreal - the documentary is still contemporary enough that you can still relate to it in the present terms.
There are few inaccuracies in this documentary. Pretty much everything is spot-on, history-wise.
I still give it a very high recommendation. If you wish to delve into the history of the grand spectacle of pro wrestling, this is a great place to start.

This is one of the best videos EVER done on the history of professional wrestling. It aired on A&E and I loved it. Worth getting.

Honestly, if you are looking for a wrestling documentary, if you don't already have it, I would highly suggest getting Beyond The Mat before buying this one, as Beyond The Mat is a much better, much deeper look into the world of professional wrestling. If you already have or have seen Beyond The Mat, this DVD would be an excellent add to your collection. This documentary originally aired on A&E, and is presented in a manner to explain pro wrestling to the non-wrestling fan. For wrestling collectors, this is a must have. For the casual fan, go with Beyond The Mat instead.

I really enjoyed the unreal story of pro wrestling. It was a thorough description about pro wrestling, its roots and important moments. If you enjoy wrestling you are going to enjoy that movie. The only hiccup I can think about is that it spends a little too much of time talking about the birth of wrestling but then again, it is a documentary.

I remember watching this documentary as an adolescent when it originally aired on A&E. At the time I enjoyed it but was anxious to see the coverage of modern pro wrestling.

Today as an adult I enjoy it much more. The footage and topics of yesteryear are much more fascinating to me now, and the footage of "modern day" wrestling is now a source of heart warming nostalgia.

This special covers the history of pro wrestling from its beginnings and touches on stars of yesteryear such as George Hackenschmidt, Frank Gotch, Ed "Strangler" Lewis, Gorgeous George, Lou Thesz, Antonino Rocca, Nature Boy Buddy Rogers etc. The only big name that was conspicuous by his absence was Bruno Sammartino.

The documentary works it's way into wrestling's second golden age touching on Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Macho Man Randy Savage etc. The child in me lights up at the 80's legends in their prime.

Finally the documentary concludes during the heat of the Monday Night Wars and in the beginning of the Attitude Era. I guess that is fitting as wrestling has declined substantially since the death of WCW and the end of the Monday Night Wars.

Overall this is a great program for the wrestling fan interested in the origins of the sport or the fan wanting to relive days past.
