5.0 out of 5 stars gut-wrenching... September 26, 2011

there are few times when you pick up a book and it really changes you - the kind of prose that makes you stop and think numerous times. The kind of prose that challenges you to really think outside of yourself...to visualize actions you know deep down may exist but don't want to acknowledge...this is one book that will do just that. I started this book late one Saturday evening - finished three chapters and set it aside until the next day...little did I know the next day would be a few hours later. This is more than a book about a gay youth, this is a book about humanity... how seedy and ugly it can be while the next moment the sun shines thru and the beauty comes to life. A roller coaster ride of emotions that will end in a way that will cause you to believe once again. You will not expect the ending and I won't share it here, suffice to say you will set this book down, most likely take a deep breath, close your eyes and begin to realize how it has transformed you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Value of Rain - Our Self Worth January 26, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
THE VALUE OF RAIN isn't for everyone. It is hard-hitting, brutally honest, and at time terrifically unpleasant. But for those up to following Charles on his journey, a rewarding ride is in store. A mix of striking horror and eloquent prose, the story follows Charles as he attempts to both understand and put to rest the demons of his past. For him, the future is unclear, but he knows that in order to even have a future, he must deal with his past. A heartfelt and compelling tale of trying to find one's self, when quicksand seems to be all around you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful & Poetic September 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
That which breaks us in our youth can take a life time to heal. Brandon Shire has displayed that very sentiment so eloquently in this impressive debut novel. The language at times poetic...at other times vulgar and crude. I discovered the book this morning and devoured it in a few hours even though at times it was uneasy to get through because of the exposed, horrific moments young Charles encountered in the institution. But this is when Shire shows what an intense author he is; unafraid to paint vivid pictures for his readers so they can live inside of that appalling world that Charles calls 'life'. With each turn of the electronic page, I found myself pulling for this protagonist on his quest of self discovery and years lost. Thank you, Mr. Shire. I may never walk out into the rain and see the annoyance that I've often felt in the past.
