Vintage Nick Velvet. The only problem is that reading more than one of these in a short period of time shows, in part, the formula that Hoch always follows. With that caveat, these are quite enjoyable.

After reading Hoch's Dr Sam stories, I bought this book of short stories Nick Velvet adventures. Nick Velvet is a thief for hire, however he just steals items with no commercial value. While this premise is fantastic, and a few of the stories are really ingenious, other stories are not well developed and some of the characters don't behave in a human fashion, they just seem to make choices to further the plot. This is specially visible in the White Queen stories. If you like truly clever whodunnit crime misteries you will be better served with Dr Sam Hawthorne books of Edward Hoch.

Ed Hoch wrote a story a month for years for Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. Invariably that was what I went to first. this compilation fills a void created by his death.
