5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Inspirational December 12, 2008
I've been a fan of Enrico's work for years, and I have to say this is my favorite thing he's done. The Venice Chronicles is an illustrated travelogue full of amazing watercolors that give you a sense of traveling through Italy. My wife and I recently visited many of the places in the book, and it makes us smile and chuckle to see Enrico's character enthusiastically describe these places, filling the gaps with delightful anecdotes about the people he meets, and detailing the circumstances of the trip itself. Which brings me to my favorite part of the book... It's also a wonderful love story describing how he and his wife Marit came together. This book has it all - romance, adventure, comedy - wrapped up in a very original package. The Venice Chronicles is inspirational for both the artist (full of beautiful art) and the casual reader (has a great, heartwarming story). I highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sketching for the rest of us February 24, 2009
Enrico has created an honest and strait forward biographical love story with a lot of panache and style. What is truly amazing here is this isn't a scrubbed and manufactured comic but a spontaneous journal-like story that is truly refreshing. Here are mistakes and talent wrapped together.

The storyline is weak as it wasn't edited for the story but a gushing forth of emotion and love for an important time in his life and it is done with pure honesty. The story is fragmented between telling about meeting, falling in love with and marrying his sweetheart to other interesting tidbits of his life- and a few of his "sketchcrawl" sketches that came in between. It makes for a disjointed story but who cares. The book is all about the sketches and his whimisical characters of himself and his loved ones from a talented storyboard artist from Pixar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Lovely! November 9, 2008
A purely delightful love story and visual Italian adventure! I absolutely love this adorable little book! Just one look at the beautiful watercolor painting on the cover gives you a glimpse of the delightful Italian Love story within. Whether you have been to Italy or not, Enrico's characterizations of himself, his new love Marit, those two silly ever present voices in his head, and various friends and family they encounter on their trip to Italy will charm the socks off anybody! You can read it quickly, for LOTS of giggles & grins, and then read it slowly and savor the details of the incredible watercolor paintings.
Besides being a master storyteller, Enrico has a special talent for painting water - the reflections, the movement, the colors - I've noticed it over and over in his work. What better way to showcase that than in a story that takes place in places like Venice and Cinque Terre.
I think this book is like a paper version of the perfect "date movie." If I were falling in love with someone, and wanted to express to him my interest, I would give him this book! Then he would surely know that I have exceedingly good taste, a fabulous sense of humor, a love of travel, adventure, and romance!

Although the story can be haphazard at times, it is light-hearted, fun and quick. The visuals are really the centerpiece of this graphic novel/comic/chronicle. Read more

The Venice Chronicles is a wonderful book - the illustrations are loose but very expressive, and while the story is a bit meandering, it is also charming. Read more
