Editorial Reviews

The first half of the Venture Bros.' fourth season might be subtitled The Venture Bros. Grow Up, since so much change is afoot for the hapless Hank and Dean Venture, their scientist dad Rusty, and bloodthirsty bodyguard Brock Samson; naturally, most of these formative moments are utter disasters, as befits the Venture family, and all of it delivered in the most inventive and frequently hilarious ways. Season 4 opens with the Venture compound under assault and Samson (voiced by Patrick Warburton) out of commission due to an explosion; Samson eventually rejoins his old outfit, the G.I. Joe-esque SPHINX, which requires the reformed arch-villain Sgt. Hatred (voiced by Christopher McCulloch, a.k.a. series cocreator Jackson Publick) to step in and mind the boys. Meanwhile, Dean (Michael Sinterniklaas) is reluctantly groomed by his father (James Urbaniak) for a life in super-science, and Hank (McCulloch) searches for a father figure to replace Brock. Candidates include Hatred and Captain Sunshine (Batman regular Kevin Conroy), whose interest in Hank is decidedly prurient. There are also surprises afoot for necromancer Dr. Orpheus (Steven Rattazzi) and daughter Triana (Lisa Hammer), as well as the Monarch's Henchman, 21 (cocreator Doc Hammer), and the rise of the delusional Phantom Limb (Urbaniak) as a threat to the Ventures. It's a lot to digest, so newcomers are advised to backtrack and check out the first three seasons before diving in; Venture vets, however, will revel in the razor-sharp dialogue, the skewering of pop-culture sacred cows, and the terrific vocal performances by every member of the cast, with Urbaniak, Rattazzi, and McCulloch as standouts. Best of all, the rest of the season, which includes one of the series' most clever outings, the noir-inspired "Everybody Comes to Hank's," is still to come. Extras include witty, informative commentary by Publick and Doc Hammer on every episode, as well as a battery of deleted scenes and a very amusing abandoned cold opening that finds 21 ruining the Monarch's mock invasion of the Venture compound. Buyers should know that the eight episodes presented on the single-disc set are uncut. --Paul Gaita

Love the series. Waiting for season 5> Hopefully it will only come in 1 volume. Breaking the season up sucked.

Welcome back to the world of the Venture Bros. Last season we watched as the terriable secret of a one Doctor Thaddues "Rusty" Venture and his two sons Dean and Hank Venture unfold amid a war between the Monarch and O.S.I forces. We watch as Hank and Dean get used to Sgt. Hatred as there bodyguard, Brock Smapson gone rogue with H.E.L.P.E.R head stuck in his chest. Rusty going through theraphy to finally deal with the many issues that his own father inficlted upoon him as a child.
Watch as Dr. Orpheus must deal with his greatest rival and his biggest disapointment of a student the Outrider. Witness as his Master tells Triana that she can become a great magical user. The Guild is under attack as two of its council memebrs are kidnapped by someone with revenge on his mind and utter control of the Guild itself.
All that and more on this the Venture Bros Season Four part one on dvd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheated!? You've Got to be kidding me October 16, 2010
It's really very simple. Are you a fan of this show? Yes? Well then what is the point of whining about getting 8 instead of 13 episodes? Consistently one of the best shows on TV, Jackson and Doc have so much love and respect for both their subject matter and their audience that I have absolutely no doubts this 'half' season won't be chock full of extras to make up the balance of 'lost' material that would have been on a DVD set of an earlier season.

I'm poor as hell like most of y'all but the argument that you are getting fleeced is weak. When it comes down to it spending your money is something you do to reward the artists out there that kick ass all day and deserve compensation. It's not like anybody on this show is rolling in it. Sack up and buy something awesome.

As far as season 4.1 is concerned, it was definitely my least favorite in terms of themes and plot. It lacked the settling in feeling of meeting everyone that season 1 possessed as well as the breakneck, loaded and utterly brilliant second season. I'm almost more interested in hearing the commentary to see where things are heading. The Ventures have earned a lifetime pass from me and as long as they are willing to keep making the show I'll keep watching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny show June 6, 2014

I love the Venture Bros. Season 4 was excellent! I highly recommend it to all Venture Fans! I don't know why they had to break up the season into two discs and sell them separately though, other than to make more money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick are AMAZING May 5, 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Season after season they keep me waiting over two years for each one then break it up...but it's okay because it is always worth the wait. It is so worth the money to buy the DVDs, it's not always on demand or available for streaming. The extras and creator commentary are always great and to hear Doc and Jackson bickering with each other and making fun of themselves is like a whole new episode.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't misread my Star rating... March 22, 2014

I give the Show 4 starts but the fact that they decided to gouge us by splitting the season into 2 dvd's instead of 1 leaves me feeling used...
