Biography

This sturdy American blues-rock trio from Texas consists of Billy Gibbons (guitar), Dusty Hill (bass), and Frank Beard (drums). They were formed in 1970 in and around Houston from rival bands the Moving Sidewalks (Gibbons) and American Blues (Hill and Beard). Their first two albums reflected the strong blues roots and Texas humor of the band. Their third album (Tres Hombres) gained them ... Read more in Amazon's ZZ Top Store

Editorial Reviews

ZZ Top underscore their bad and nationwide bonafides with a hits collection packed with many of the biggest songs that have made "that little ol band from Texas" among rock's most legendary groups. Over the course of more than 40 years together, their recordings have sold more than 50 million units around the world.

This two-disc version doubles down on the band s music with 40 tracks that form a more detailed snapshot of the trio s stellar career. In addition to including every song heard on the single disc collection, Very Baddest digs deeper into early albums to uncover killer tracks like "Pearl Necklace," "Just Got Paid" and "(Someone Else Been) Shaking Your Tree." The collection also spotlights later albums like XXX (1999) and Mescalero (2003) with "Fearless Boogie" and "Que Lastima." Appropriately, the collection closes with ZZ Top's unique take on the immortal "As Time Goes By," a song made famous by the 1942 movie Casablancaa and a tacit commentary on the group's unparalleled longevity.

Customer Reviews

Excellent collection of songs.

If you don't already have their albums then buy it and enjoy it; if you do have them then don't waste the money.
Skiguy
The sound quality compared to the box set and even the individual cds is horrible.

I already have all their CDs and previous compilations, but I was interested in this one and how it may be different, so I borrowed it from our local library. First of all, there is no mention of any remastering whatsoever in the booklet, so I don't know if these tracks were actually remastered or not.

If you're curious about the volume levels, they are consistent with the volume from the BBQ Box Set from 2003. That is, slightly louder than the non-remastered CDs, slightly softer than the 2006 remasters of Tres Hombres and Fandango, and a LOT softer than the very loud 2008 remaster of Eliminator. That is not to imply the louder ones are worse or better, just wanted to point out that these are of a different volume.

The booklet, while 12 pages, contains only a tracklisting and photos of their album and single covers. No lyrics, no biography or anything of interest. (Unless you're interested in album covers and tracklistings.)

At this point in their career, it would be nice if ZZ would just remaster their ENTIRE catalog, with bonus tracks (demos, outtakes, etc. ). A new master campaign with consistent volumes, consistent mastering and a consistent selection of bonus material.

I gave this 3 stars. The music of course is 5 stars. But the redundancy of this compilation, coupled with the booklet's lack of any meaningful info, makes this a very average compilation.

ZZ Top is a fantastic band, with a catalog containing plenty of great songs, a good number of which are included in this compilation. However, many of their most highly regarded songs are represented by poorly remastered or severely truncated versions. Most of the intro to 'Viva Las Vegas' has been trimmed, and 'Sharp Dressed Man' and 'Legs' have both been shorted by well over a minute each. 'Cheap Sunglasses' is stripped of all the edge that ZZ Top is known for with an overly crisp remastering, and other tracks suffer the same fate. This compilation is a joke, and no one, not long-time fans, or casual listeners wanting to explore the band's oeuvre should even think about buying it.

First off, if you want to put "single" versions of songs on compilations at least have the courtesy of including the album version as well. The version of Cheap Sunglasses in this collection is a joke. Song selection is ok, but a lot of the remastering is shoddy sounding like patch work. Love this band and this release doesn't do them justice.

Terrible sound quality. Thought because this was a "new" compilation, it would be remastered. The sound quality compared to the box set and even the individual cds is horrible. Just dead. Stay away from this set. Returning this to Amazon.

I lived in or around Houston during Top's heyday, up to the release of Eliminator. Subsequently, I have heard a ton of the band's music on commercial radio and have seen them a few times live (always superb). Their trademark brand of hard rock Texas blues-boogie almost always hit the mark during the early years. Unfortunately, as with any career-spanning set, there is bound to be some dross included from the artist's declining years. This wouldn't be so bad if the set were arranged chronologically, but it's not. This is a fatal flaw for anyone seeking to avoid some of the complete and utter crap the band has put out since the 80s, starting with the insipid versions of 'Legs' that appeared in 1983 and the 1985 remix. Chronologically speaking, the first 22 tracks make a reasonably listenable 80min CD:

01 (Somebody Else Been) Shaking Your Tree
02 Just Got Back From Baby's
03 Francine
04 Just Got Paid
05 Waitin' for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago
06 Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers
07 La Grange
08 Blue Jean Blues
09 Heard It on the X
10 Tush
11 It's Only Love
12 Arrested for Driving While Blind
13 I Thank You
14 I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide
15 Dust My Broom
16 Cheap Sunglasses
17 Tube Snake Boogie
18 Pearl Necklace
19 Party on the Patio
20 Gimme All Your Lovin'
21 Got Me Under Pressure
22 Sharp Dressed Man

As others have pointed out, the above list contains some lamentably abbreviated songs and at least one clanger remaster (i.e. Pearl Necklace). Also, as the set wears on, it completely loses the plot on the sound level engineering front. A band of this stature deserves better.

I would have to say this is one of the best collections by an artist. It appears that the tracks were all mastered well and came off of this collection at a better bit rate than the original
