Product Description

It s the crime within the crime we re interested in...

The seedy underbelly of cosmopolitan London is the backdrop of this award-winning police drama. Prostitution, extortion, pedophilia, mutilation, rape and murder are the chief concerns of the vice unit of London s Metropolitan Police, who patrol a violent patch of turf where life is cheap... and young flesh even cheaper.

THE VICE stars Ken Stott (THE SINGING DETECTIVE), David Harewood (BLOOD DIAMOND), Marc Warren (BBC s DRACULA) and Caroline Katz (THE BILL) as the tight-knit undercover team, who put their personal lives on hold and lay their lives on the line in the war against corruption.

Series One consists of three two-part 60 minute dramas:

In Daughters, Detective Inspector Pat Chappel reaches out to a battered prostitute (Sally Hurst, PRIME SUSPECT 6) in an attempt to nail a sleazy procurer (Struan Rodgers, PRIME SUSPECT 3) who is a suspect in the savage murder of a high class callgirl.

In Sons, WPC Cheryl Hutchins goes undercover to nail a nightclub owner (BLACKADDER s Tim McInnerny) who traffics in hardcore S&M videos featuring underage boys. When she shuts the operation down cold, Chappel fears the wider investigation may be derailed.

In Dabbling, the team s investigation of an escort agency fronting for drug traffickers is compromised when PC Raymond is unable to resist temptation.

During its five year run, THE VICE received as many award nominations as it did viewer complaints for the graphic nature of its content!

THE VICE… promises much sleaze, violence, sexual abuse and exploitation… and, surprisingly, for a television show, it actually delivers --DVD Times

5.0 out of 5 stars Young Rebus meets "The Wire" December 24, 2009
If you like Ken Stott in Rebus, you'll like this earlier effort. The subject matter is pretty seamy, particularly for American TV audiences, which is probably why it never made it to PBS or A&E. It does have a little of "The Wire" feel to it, but it's clearly Ken Stott's vehicle as DI Pat Chapel. Stott plays Chapel like a younger Rebus who still feels a certain degree of devotion to the job and not just to the crime at hand. But, like Rebus, Chapel is a flawed character constantly flirting with on the job disasters, mostly of his own making. His subordinates are affected by the nature of the work and his less than stellar management style, but in the end they catch the bad guys.

The series has a few unusual twists and turns with one of the stars coming to an early end in Season 2 which, apparently, is all we're allowed to see of the generally excellent series. The show ran for 5 years on British TV, but so far only the first two seasons have been released on DVD. Since the show originally ran starting in 1998-99 I don't hold out a lot of hope for the balance of the episodes. Again, the subject matter is rough with all the expected violence and nudity, but the acting and scripts are first rate. Just don't expect "Midsomer Murders".

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULLY RICH SERIES March 27, 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Didn't know anything about this series but I love British mysteries so I got it and I think it's my favorite....well I do love Prime Suspect and Trial and Retribution but The Vice is compelling. The ensemble cast is extraordinary!
The show deals with the seamier side of life and crime but my fascination was really with the development of the characters who investigate these crimes led by their boss played by Ken Stott. It is so worth watching that I'm saving both Season 1 and 2 to watch again in a year or two. Recommend this to all British mystery lovers especially those who love the grittier ones and ones that deal with a team and not one main character. There's a love interest in this season and it was unusual and totalling engaging. Buy this and Season 2!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Series December 9, 2009
This is the type of series that the Brits seem to do so well. It is a combination of crime solving mystery and strong character development. A good cast makes this series stand out. With a title like The Vice, one can tell that this is a dark and gritty series. If you are looking for action then I would suggest something else. If you look for good acting, strong character development and a good plot, then this is something that you will enjoy.

Gritty, eye-opening stuff. Made me appreciate how petty my problems really are. I can cancel my therapy appointments and just watch this to get my head outta my rear.

Intellectually stimulating while simultaneously entertaining for a documentary style news show. It is amazing fotoage they get and the interviews they conduct no one else is currently doing in the main stream media.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very eye opening and intellectual series June 10, 2014
I believe it is very important to understand what is going on in the world today, and it is also important to receive a proper unbiased opinion of whats going on. If anyone really wants to understand what is going on outside of the US. i would recommend watching VICE. Although gory, it holds many truths and reveals many evils that are still present today. From terrorists to poaching, children armies to extreme dictators. Drug wars to Religious wars. VICE is an amazing insight into what is going on today. (i must warn that it does show graphic content, which although horrible to see adds to the truth of what is happening)

also, do not listen to any of the other comments that talk about it being a British show over 15 years old or being a drama packed series. They are obviously referring to the series THE VICE. Not this series which is called VICE.

3.0 out of 5 stars Loved Caroline Katz July 28, 2014
By Elliott
Loved Caroline Katz, but the lead actor doesn't seem much of a police professional. He seems arbitrary. The stories are ok, no different than any police procedurals.
