Editorial Reviews

Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611) was the most famous Spanish composer of the Renaissance and one of the most important composers of the Counter-Reformation along with Palestrina and Lassus. Once neglected, his music has undergone a revival in the 20th century. His works, all in the genre of sacred music, have a mystical intensity and direct emotional appeal that consistently move listeners. This boxed set of three reissues from The Tallis Scholars catalog contains some of the finest music written in this period, offering a unique celebration of Victoria s anniversary.

Format: Audio CD
This is a very welcome re-release of the three discs by The Tallis Scholars of the music of Victoria. For my money, the Requiem (recorded in 1987) and the Lamentations (recorded in 2010) are two of the finest discs of Victoria available, and the Tenebrae Responsories are very good, too.

I have owned and loved all three discs from the moment each came out and have had years of pleasure from them. If you have any interest in music of this period, I am sure you will too and I recommend it very warmly.

Below are the reviews I wrote of the original releases of the Requiem and the Lamentations in case you are interested in a more detailed review.

This is a sensational disc which has been one of my very favourites for many years. The Tallis Scholars are one of the world's truly great ensembles and have been right at the top of their field for well over 25 years now, and this recording although nearly 20 years old shows why. The sound is simply magical and when Caroline Trevor begins the introit with "Requiem" and the other voices come in and spread out into "dona eis Domine" it always gives me goose bumps; and the section that follows is, I reckon, two minutes of what heaven sounds like. Throughout the disc the individual lines are fluent and distinct while combining to give the loveliest overall effect, the singers are universally excellent and the emotion in the words comes through brilliantly.

The music itself is very, very beautiful and the combination of this and the magnificent performance makes this one of my favourite discs. I cannot recommend this highly enough. It is an absolute gem.
