4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By M. J. O'Connell on July 30, 2012
Format: Paperback
Leo has put together a nice collection of teachings more or less taken directly, word for word, from the works of Harley Swiftdeer Reagan and Hymeyohsts Storm. I wonder if the Deer Tribe has considered suing him for copyright?
The medicine wheels as presented in this book are an amazing set of teachings that have no verifiable origin. This does not discount from their value, but does create an environment whereby authors using such materials, including Leo, are forced to express classic new age generalisations of; ancient, antique, elders, timeless, mysteriousness, since always, universe began, and so on. This is a pity because these teachings as tools are wonderfully insightful and having a genuine sense of their origins would really be useful and might give rise to a more appropriate exploration of the nature and function of such tools. At present their origin equates to: Hymeyhost Storm and Swiftdeer, both controversial figures for their role in the world of neo-shamanism. They are fascinating individuals and Swiftdeer's work with medicine wheels is unparalleled, in spite of the criticism he continues to receive from Native American tribes.
Leo has done a nice job of putting this materials together in an accessible form. I do wonder though if he might benefit from a refresher course with the originator of such material. If you fancy skipping the messenger man, Swiftdeer in his guise of Thunder Strikes, has now published a public version of many of the Deer Tribe teachings in this book: Song of the Deer: The Great Sun Dance Journey of the Soul with Other

More About the Author

I had a twenty year career as an engineer and business manager followed by a mid-life crisis - well what else would you expect! This led to an eight year period of therapy and life changing experiences.

Living in California doing my MA in Holistic Psychology, I came across the ancient ways of the shamans and recognised the earthy and the magical that was missing from Western cultural concepts. Shamanism is spiritual, ecological and psychological, it connects us to the roots of our being and to the great powers of nature that surround us and without which we do not exist.

It is the only path I have found in which nothing is left out - and it is the only path I have found which doesn't, however subtly, try to tell me that something in me is put together wrong!

'I walk in beauty, beauty before me, beauty behind me and beauty all around me'. That is what I try to remember daily.
