Editorial Reviews

Review

This is precisely the sort of movie people who no longer go to movies often complain 'they just don t make anymore.' The Village Barbershop is just as warm, humorous and ingratiating as it means to be, with solid work by all principal cast. --Variety

With outstanding outings from Ratzenberger and Cole, The Village Barbershop lathers up a poignant piece of first-time filmmaking --Moving Pictures Magazine

The Village Barbershop is a testament to under-appreciated star power; a wish for a world in which everybody knew John Ratzenberger s name. --The Warren Report

Product Description

Art Leroldi is terminal. Terminally irritable, that is. A small-time Reno barber stuck in a rut of haircuts, hot dogs and horse books, he lives every day like a warmed-over version of the last. Hit with the unexpected death of his long-time business partner and last apparent friend, he is faced with losing the only thing in life that he has got left-his mans- man barbershop. To keep it, he ll be forced to hire the last person on earth he d ever want working there-a woman. More specifically, Gloria MacIntyre, a spitfire young lady who suddenly finds herself unable to take Art s no for an answer.
This poignant comedy tells the humorous, sweet story of a fading old man who has lost his way and a determined young woman looking to find hers.
Two unlikely people offered a second chance in one unlikely place- The Village Barbershop

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a Butcher job January 3, 2009
Format:DVD
My friends and I are usually very picky about movies, but we thought this small budget film was a king among the art house genre. The story line is cool but not too fishy. The neighbors, Brian and Erik, were a riot. Shelly Cole's character, Gloria, is a great addition to the film, a true sunshine daydream. If you would like a great Saturday night at home. Buy this film, call your closest friends and gather around for a barrel of laughs and a few tears...

3.0 out of 5 stars A heart-warming, funny movie! March 30, 2009
Format:DVD
The Village Barbershop is a nice surprise. A heartwarming mix of loneliness with humor, this film takes place in old Reno. A barber who feels he has lost everything comes in contact with a young woman who has never had much of anything. She is full of spunk and determination, however, and eventually the barber gives in to her ideas for his dying barbershop. Hilarious scenes with the barber's college age renters next door. The unusual friendship that develops between the barber and the young woman brings each of them to better lives. The writer, director and producer, Chris Ford, has a winner with his first movie. See it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Charmer! June 25, 2009
Format:DVD
This is a charming film. Funny and touching. The cast brings a real depth to the characters and situation. You'll laugh at the bad guys and wish you could know the good guys. John Ratzenberger gives an award worthy performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars So enjoyed this movie April 2, 2009
Format:DVD
I just loved this movie. John Ratzenberger is wonderful, going beyond his usual roles. His character is grumpy and petty much of the time (and deliciously foul-mouthed), but so sympathetic and moving. Shelley Cole's Gloria has exactly the right mix of smart and sexy, practical and hot-headed. The characters are completely believable. I grew up in Reno and appreciated the role the city was given. The movie's pace is perfect; I love having space to breathe and the director's help in noticing quiet details. Chris Ford is now on my radar and I will be eagerly awaiting more of his work.

This is a very well told story. The movie succeeds in being heartwarming without being sappy. The acting is solid, and the film making is superb. Great DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timely March 3, 2009
Format:DVD
In this trying time in our country, I found this movie to be very refreshing. We were able to feel a surge of emotions throughout the film, and end up happy. What a nice diversion from our daily lives and the stock market. Everyone should treat themselves to this great escape for a couple of hours.
