Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The four-disc Vincent Price Collection offers a fearsome feast of classic horror for fans of the genre and its sinister yet elegant leading man, as well as a terrific array of supplemental features. As with many of Shout Factory's home video releases, the extras compiled here are a mix of material previously issued on DVD and newly recorded extras, as well as several vintage items that may be new to some viewers. For those who snapped up the Price titles when they were released on DVD as part of MGM's Midnite Movies line, the Collection reissues commentaries by director Roger Corman that were featured on their presentations of House of Usher (1960) and The Pit and the Pendulum (1961), as well as an on-camera interview he recorded for their Haunted Palace (1963) and Masque of the Red Death (1964) DVDs. The iconic filmmaker contributes informative and frequently wry discussions of working with Price, as well as adapting Edgar Allan Poe's material and the occasional perils of low-budget filmmaking. Commentary by actor Ian Ogilvy and producer Philip Waddilove for Witchfinder General (1968) is also culled from an MGM/Midnite Movies disc, as is Witchfinder General: Michael Reeves' Horror Classic, a 25-minute featurette that discusses the late filmmaker's all-too-brief CV, with much of the focus devoted to this controversial title. Two lengthy interviews with Price conducted by author and historian David Del Valle--a 62-minute on-camera conversation with the actor and a 40-plus-minute audio interview recorded in his home in 1988--are ported over from the long out-of-print Vincent Price--The Sinister Image DVD, and make welcome returns to home video here. The final previously issued extra included in the Collection--save for the theatrical trailers for each picture, all presented in widescreen and in high definition--is a curious prologue (also hi-def) for Pit and the Pendulum featuring actress Luana Anders and filmed in 1968 to fill out the running time for television broadcast.

The all-new material featured in The Vincent Price Collection is anchored by audio commentary tracks by Lucy Chase Williams, author of The Complete Films of Vincent Price, for Usher and Haunted Palace. Williams provides a wealth of historical information on both films, and her input is buttressed by observations from Richard Heft on Palace and Price's own words, delivered by actor Pitor Michael (doing a credible imitation of the actor's famously plummy tone) on Usher. Author Tom Weaver provides a second, equally interesting commentary track for Palace that includes a clip from a telephone interview conducted with the film's costar, Debra Paget. Director Robert Fuest is front and center on a lively new commentary track (with Hammer Films historian Marcus Hearn) on The Abominable Dr. Phibes, which is partnered with a second commentary track by Justin Humphreys that devotes a considerable amount of time to the picture's elaborate production design. Author Steve Haberman also contributes a new commentary track for Masque of the Red Death, while Price's daughter, Victoria, is featured in a heartfelt conversation about her father that touches on, among other topics, his passion for the visual arts. The set is rounded out by the alternate opening and closing credits for the American release of Witchfinder, titled The Conqueror Worm and featuring Price intoning the Poe poem from which it draws its name, and an array of trailers for other Price titles, including House of Wax and The Tingler. Perhaps the most charming and offbeat extra featured on the set are introductions and closing comments for five of the six films that Price filmed in the 1980s for an Iowa public television series called Vincent Price's Gothic Horrors, as well as an interview with the program's executive producer, which, like the Collection itself, underscores the actor's long-standing reputation as a consummate professional and fan favorite. --Paul Gaita

5.0 out of 5 stars What's in it.... July 2, 2013
Format:Blu-ray
1. The Fall of House of Usher a.k.a House of Usher (1960).
2. The Pit and the Pendulum (1961).
3. The Haunted Palace (1963).
4. The Masque of the Red Death (1964).
5. Witchfinder General - and its alternate U.S. version of the film, The Conqueror Worm (1968).
6. The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971).

Thought I'd provide what Amazon hasn't. Maybe Shout! Factory hasn't made anything official.

The sequel to Phibes would be nice. Seems incomplete without it. Of course, you could list The Raven, A Comedy of Terrors (* looks at watch *) well... many more. But not a bad looking set if this is what it ends up being.

(will replace this with a review when it comes out and I can afford to get it)

Let me just preface this review in saying that I love these films, and this set provides THE best way available for viewing them. It even includes nice "video bookends" by Vincent Price (via Iowa Public Television) where he provides both an introduction to the films (5 out of the 6 anyway), as well as some closing words at the end. Even though these bookends weren't restored, it is still totally awesome to have Vincent Price himself introduce these films to us, any time we want!

However, the main items on this set, being the films themselves, were not given proper restoration. Not sure if SHOUT! couldn't afford to restore them, or didn't have permission, but it is a shame that the films were not given the same treatment as the Universal Monster films that were released in 2012 on Blu-ray. The films on the Vincent Price set still have visible film scratches, and the colors are slightly faded.

But like I said, simply releasing these on Blu-ray does provide us with the clearest prints to date. Plus, Pit and the Pendulum is finally in ANAMORPHIC widescreen, which is great. I do wish that Dr. Phibes Rises Again was included, instead of Witchfinder General (not that big of a fan), to go along with The Abominable Dr. Phibes on this set. Seems incomplete without it. Maybe they're saving it for a Volume 2?

Definitely worth picking up for fans of these films, even if you already own them on DVD. I just wish the films were properly restored, and that Dr. Phibes Rises Again was included.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Price is right! October 21, 2013
By Jobla
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful collection of Vincent Price horror classics. These versions have superior color to previous home video versions. In the case of THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM, this transfer corrects an earlier, flawed DVD edition.

The supplements are a real treat in this set. Most of the films have rare Vincent Price intros and outros that were filmed for an Iowa PBS TV station in the 1980's, which haven't been widely available before. THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM has a rare prologue that was filmed for the movie's premiere on network television in the late 1960's. In fact, the version of that prologue found in this set is more complete than the earlier release of it on MGM DVD.

There are also some interviews and/or audio commentaries with director Roger Corman, Price himself, Price's daughter Victoria Price, and authors Tom Weaver and Price biographer Lucy Chase Williams. There's quite a bit of new material contained in the supplements, even for those who are habitual devotees of these films.

To those who are complaining about some "missing" titles, many of the titles they cite are actually the property of other studios. For example, Warner owns HOUSE OF WAX (available on Blu-ray), Fox owns THE FLY (available on Blu-ray), Sony/Columbia owns THE TINGLER (available on DVD), and HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL might be public domain. This set is a collection of films that Price did for American-International Pictures.

All in all, a great production from Shout Factory!
