A most impressive work! The author presented a compelling and enlightening portrait of America's first 80 years. Gripping and powerful!

I have always marveled that the colonies could overthrow the British crown and form a country. That is what this book is about. As the ideas mature and are molded by realities how does a political entity adapt and transform society to create a sustainable form.

This work describing the inner details of the formation of the United States government, was, at best, tedious to wade through. I gave up half way through as, while insightful, the prose was so dull it would make good kindling.

Book was very long and quite verbose. A mounting of words in some areas while virtually ignoring other important events

Still in the process of reading but about 1/3rd complete which is unusual because I am a fast reader and normally complete chosen books in days, never any longer than a week and it's now been nearly three weeks and still reading. This is somewhat dry in that it gives factual information about the nation, presidents, congress and the state of the country beginning with Washington as president and continuing. It is very good because not only is there just matter of fact information but the overall situations are explained in detail. I am a history lover but have never seen this complete a work.. worth reading.. I highly recommend Vineyard.

Great American history book. A slow read, very little story, lots of great facts. Entertaining for a while, then becomes a " I will continue later type of book", then when you need something to read, you pick it up and read again for a while. I still have not finished it.

James MacGregor Burns brilliantly recaptures the pivotal turning points in the history of this great nation. Highly recommended for every American to read to understand our identity and political process.

An excellent and well written history of the US from the Articles of Confederation to the Civil War issue of the Emancipation Proclamation.
