More About the Author

Peter Birk was born in Oakland, California, but was raised in Decatur, Illinois. He started writing in grade school, and never stopped to look back. He studied fiction writing at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois and at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois, where he was privileged to work with Robin Metz, Robert Hellenga, and David Foster Wallace. He emigrated to Iowa, and has worked a variety of odd jobs throughout Iowa City, but he has been writing the entire time, even through the period wherein he claimed he no longer wished to be a writer.

After reading Birk's full-length novel, _To Trust the Wolf_, my only disappointment was that it could be years before the rest of the series is released! I'm so glad that _The Violin_ gave me another peek into the amazing world Birk has crafted. He has a way of writing from each character's heart that makes the fantastical Raioume seem familiar. This short story had so many of the qualities I loved from the novel, and leaves me just as eager to read more. (Hopefully Amazon will catch on that the e-version is being offered for free on other sites & make it available for free here too!)

Sophie wanted to be a witch so badly she taught herself to read. This story is about the disastrous consequences of those actions.

Birk has an engaging style of writing that captured me the moment I started reading the story. The storyline is quite poignant and it had a bittersweet undercurrent. You can feel Sophie's longing and emotion throughout the story.

There's a sense of the world without it being overly complicated. The structure of Raouime is laid out for you in gradual steps without over-whelming you. I thought this was expertly done since Raouime is quite layered and complex.

This is a great way to experience a bit of Raouime without committing to the full-length book. Even if you have read the book, this is an excellent stand-alone story that won't disappoint!

The author has imagined a world so different from my own, where the ability to play a violin is completely unique, but he made that world real to me. I also responded to the unfulfilled dreams of the narrator, and found myself rooting for her to find her power. To the author, I say thanks for the bringing me into this captivating world you've created in just a few pages.

it is amazing I couldn't stop reading it, I was up all night just to finish it. It was worth it even though I was tired at school. :)

Like in the story, I hope not all is lost after an apocalyptic event especially art & music. Makes you wonder about storing all that data electronically in the cloud.....but I read this on a KIndle app.

Even tho it is more of a fantasy book, there are hordes of witches present in this story making for a good Halloween-related read. I'm not normally one to enjoy books about witches, but this one had well-developed characters, great dialogue, and an intriguing storyline about a mundane (normal person) trying to fit into a world of magic & witches via her skill in (you guessed it) the violin. I thought this passage in particular was a good one and should give you a sense of the author's skills, "With my eyes closed, the voice of the violin became my world, my canvas. I tried to fill it with all that I could: the sound of my pere's laughter, the wind whispering through the trees outside of Inverness: Henri's smile..." Very good book that I liked a lot!

I'll be concentrating on reviewing Halloween themed book thru the month of October for the second year running so feel free to "see all my reviews" most recently if you're of a like mind and am looking for some spooky stuff this time of year.

This was a great little story to read in a great universe I already enjoy. I wish there was more to read. Craving.

Very well done though I suspect this story is better read after reading Birk's novel. It definitely got me interested in checking out more of his work.
