I think my review title is my entire review.
I could add that Trace Adkins was a good "type-cast" fit for the role of the Virginian, but he is not, in my estimation, a great actor and seemed a little flat to me. The character that was known as the "Virginian" in the book is first encountered "teasing" and light-heartedly giving another character a hard time and the version that Trace Adkins plays is a little bit of an overly-wound and uptight version of the Virginian who probably couldn't take a joke and almost seems a little dim.

I thought the book was OK and the movie was an OK treatment of the story. The acting was OK. The movie was OK. If you are like me and want to watch every western... this is a western.. and it is OK... so you should watch it... OK?

We bought The Virginian in a big box store and it fit well into watching another western with a country western singer starring. I didn't know how well Adkins would do as a character I have dearly loved. He did great. The cast was good and although it varied from the book (which I dearly love), it was a very good western for today with a lot of truth as well as action.

The plot doesn't actually follow that of the book. It has the same characters but it goes in a different direction. One of those diversions comes with Judge Henry, who is pretty much a good guy in the book. He is not in the film. Ron Perlman is really good at this kind of character where he could keep you guessing-- unless you'd read the blurb on the back of the cover.

The blurb was really my one complaint. They aren't easy to write as I well know. In this case, I felt it made it sound like the city guy changed the western guy. I didn't see it that way. I felt they both changed, coming together in the middle based on what they had experienced. Trace Adkins did an excellent job portraying the diversity of his character as he recognized the world was shifting and things weren't all as he had thought. I also liked that he was middle aged and still strong, capable and willing to do what it took. That is a western hero!

I will be watching this more than once-- and if more indie westerns of this quality are made, I'll be watching for them!

Trace Adkins demeans every past VIRGINIAN movie or TV show ever filmed. His acting displays the old adage...Hat on/Hat off.
I truly wouldn't even give it one star.

A new twist to The Virginian saga. Trace Adkins was really good in the role of The Virginian, an ex-Confederate who runs the ranch of Judge Henry (Ron Perlman) and has a sense of honor; The Code. But here's the twist that you need to see. The names are the same but the story is a bit different, a good western. See it, you won't be disappointed.

The cover of this movie is about as exciting as it gets. So, stare at it, if you want your money's worth. Very slow. Too many poor actors. The American Indians looked like a few guys from New Jersey who woke up on the beach after a long night of 1980's partying. They died with hilarious overacting drops.

Even the horses looked bored. Some of the music sounded like it came from Bonanza.

BUT . . . one good thing. I think we found a new action/western gene star!

Trace Adkins was excellent most of the time. Only he and Pearlman could carry a scene believably. Then maybe the drunken friend was pretty good. When another character talked, it was like someone interrupted the movie.

Boring plot, not enough action, and under-used talent.

In the right film, with better writers, Trace Adkins is going to be an awesome western star. He's a hulk of a man who can act. His expressions are priceless tough guy expressions, realistic and telling. Loved his performance.

Great story line. Trace Adkins did a great job as the Virginian. Just wish there was more music, Trace should have done a song for the opening or the ending of the movie.
