This review is from: The Visit (Amazon Instant Video)
I am a movie buff and been trying to find this movie for over 40 years to purchase. Tried Amazon and there it was. This movie originally billed with Zorba The Greek and was considered the "B" movie and Zorba was the "A" movie. (back in the days when theatres showed 2 movies) Liked this one more. Both starred Anthony Quinn. Buy it for 1.99 from Amazon.com.d

4.0 out of 5 stars A diluted but still effective rendering of the Durrenmatt play, May 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A small impoverished town in Eastern Europe is anxiously awaiting the return of their prodigal daughter (Ingrid Bergman), who left the town penniless and pregnant but is returning as the world's wealthiest woman. The town hopes that Bergman will aid them financially and when she returns she agrees to give the town two million dollars ... on one condition. They execute the man (Anthony Quinn) who wronged her! German director Bernhard Wicki (THE BRIDGE) directs this film adaptation of the stage success by Friedrich Durrenmatt but the film, while effective, considerably diminishes the play's impact by eliminating much of the black humor and watering down the play's nihilistic ending. But it still manages to convey the horror of, what on the surfaces appears a decent small town, morphing into a hotbed of fascist justice. Bergman is marvelous. Tightly wound up and ready to jump out of her skin, seems to relish playing the scorned woman avenging her wrong. Bergman's elegant Rene Hubert costumes received an Oscar nomination and the minimal score by Richard Arnell and Hans Martin Majewski. With Valentina Cortese, Irina Demick, Claude Dauphin, Romolo Valli, Paolo Stoppa, Hans Christian Blech and Eduardo Cianelli.

Alas, the Fox DVD from Spain is in the pan and scan format rather than the film's original CinemaScope 2.35 aspect ratio.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Visit, October 10, 2009
This review is from: The Visit (Amazon Instant Video)
I first saw this movie when I was about fourteen years old. I grew up in Brooklyn, New York and they had a show that came on television called Million Dollar Movie. They played The Visit. What an amazing movie. What stirring performances by both Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn.

It is the ultimate "hell hath no fury as a woman scorned" movie. I understand that the plays ending was different. I personally love the irony of the films ending, but I won't spoil any of the movie for you.

I will just say, if you have not seen it do. Pop some popcorn, light a fire, and snuggle in to watch a wonderful classic movie.
