Editorial Reviews

Review

"If you or a relative are troubled with alcoholism, The Vitamin Cure for Alcoholism is a great read."  (Ronald Hoffman, M.D.)

"Having the foremost advocates of megavitamin therapy, or orthomolecular medicine, tell us how they define and treat alcoholism and other addictions, is quite exciting. Both authors have that great ability to boil down highly technical material into clearly understandable language."
(Ralph Campbell, M.D.)

If not a cure then very close to one. Briefly stated-- The vitamin cure for alcoholism is niacin. The old fashioned kind that gives you a flush. 20 years ago this was the common form of niacin but has since been crowded out of the market by the no_flush, time release niacin which is not what you want to buy. Rugby makes this kind of flushing niacin. Swanson has their own brand of flushing niacin that is 500mg capsule x 250 capsules x $6.98 and as of December 2013. Swanson and Rugby niacin can be bought at Amazon. Buy the 500mg size and start with part of the tablet or capsule. Eat it at mealtime to reduce or eliminate the flush. Hoffer will say 1.5-3 grams is a good daily amount for you. You take niacin a few times a day and the daily total is 1.5-3 grams. Maybe some need more but start gradually. Don't be scared of the niacin flush, it is your friend.

Everyone has a different niacin reaction. I started gradually....By now I am up to 1000mg first thing in the morning. Taken with 4oz hot or cold water. This produces more of a flush than when taken with food. The classic Abram Hoffer (niacin guru who lived to 91) advice is to take niacin after meals. I take a few more 500mg capsules during the day so I take about 2500mg daily. To get over the hump you need to spread out your niacin. You want to maintain high niacin levels in your body throughout the day. So divided doses of niacin.
I know that if I took zero niacin for a week then took 500mg with hot water, that I will get a strong flush. I have done this. This is what scares off niacin newbies. Once you start daily niacin and take it a few times during the course of a day, the flush gets diminished.

Niacin is the core but get this book for the full story. Such as take a good B-50 complex a few times a day.

This is a small, easy-to-read book on treating alcoholism with vitamins. The premise is that alcoholism is a metabolic disorder, in which the patient uses alcohol to cope. The authers draw the parallel between alcoholics using alcohol to treat their condition, and diabetics using insulin to treat theirs.

The cure lies in getting the disorder back into balance through high qualitiy nutrition (from food), and additional nutrients from mega doses of vitamins. The book discusses what sugar does and why it is one of the worst things for alcoholics. It also points out that alcoholics take in most of their calories from drinking. While alcohol is busy depleting the body of essential nutrients, the normal nutrition one gets from food is not going in. This creates a severe vitamin deficiency, which causes the dependency.

The most valuable part of the book is that it tells which vitamins help with cravings, and the "DT's." It discusses how critical and dangerous detoxification can be, and how the vitamins -- especially niacin (as nicotinic acid) and the other B vitamins (e.g., B1 and B6) are the cure for this debilitating, and often, heartbreaking condition.

This little book may have saved my girlfriends life. In fact we are wondering if she ever really was an alcoholic or just nutritionally imbalanced the whole time. We went out and bought all the recommended supplements and immediately started taking them even during detox. Within days she was filled with energy, hope and happiness. The best part of course is no urge to drink. Her body was definitely craving something but it was nutrients not alcohol. I've never seen her so happy and content. Try this if everything else has failed. In fact try this first and see what happens.

The Vitamin Cure for Alcoholism
Orthomolecular Treatment of Addictions
by Abram Hoffer, PhD, MD, FRCP(C) and Andrew Saul, PhD
2009, Basic Health, 134 pages [...]

The Vitamin Cure for Alcoholism explains how patients can stop craving alcohol and restore their health. Two credible authors wrote this enlightening book. By the time he passed away at age 91 ½, Abram Hoffer, PhD, MD, FRCP(C) had earned an international reputation for researching and developing orthomolecular psychiatry (as a complementary dimension of care), teaching other doctors and educating the public. Thousands of patients recovered. Co-author Andrew Saul, PhD contributed his fascination with forgotten treatments and his capabilities as an author and an educator.

Before he became a physician and then a psychiatrist, Abram Hoffer obtained a PhD in biochemistry. Hoffer's advanced degree, research experience and observation skills proved useful during his medical studies. He learned to respect patients and above all, to do no harm. Starting in the 1950s and continuing for sixty years, Dr. Hoffer researched the chemical basis of psychiatry and developed treatments for schizophrenia, psychosis, anxiety, depression and alcoholism. Hoffer did the first double-blind placebo-controlled experiments in psychiatry, in the 1950s. He tested niacin and niacinamide (vitamin B3) for schizophrenia and discovered that optimum (large) doses of vitamins B3 and C can heal psychosis and restore normal brain function. Linus Pauling, PhD (Nobel-prize-winning chemist) read about Hoffer's vitamin therapy and found it so inspiring that, in 1968, Pauling invented a new word when he described Hoffer's practice of prescribing nutritional supplements as "orthomolecular" psychiatry.
