5.0 out of 5 stars fast paced and exciting May 7, 2012
By DeeLaM
After the original series Avatar: The Last Airbender ended, the Nickelodeon folks (for some reason unfathomable to me) quashed any hopes of ever reviving it. They eventually confirmed that fans had shown a positive response to Avatar Kyoshi and were interested in starting up a new series based on a female Avatar and to avoid a rehash of Aang's adventures it would be set in a single semi-modern city and feature people who are anti-bending of any element. True to their word, enter Avatar Korra. If you're wondering about Zuko's mom or are craving a continuation of the gang's adventures I recommend Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Promise, Part 1. The book raises more questions than it answers but it is definitely a start to unraveling the mystery. The rest of the comics are as of 5/18/2012 unpublished so we have no choice other than to be patient and let the series creators tell the story in their own time/way.

The legend of Korra starts off with Aang's successor, Korra learning Airbending under Aang's son Tenzin in the semi-modern Republic City. To avoid overlap with the last airbender Korra is shown to have already mastered the bending of the other 3 elements. To fill the need for a bad guy (terrifying guy, really) we have Amon - the leader of the anti-bender movement. For the sports lovers, there's the pro-bending championship featuring some really cool bending moves aaand we get to see more than just one or even two elements being bended at the same time (in a non-lethal environment)! For the pet lovers, there are characters Naga and Pabu who could easily grow to be as lovable as Appa and Momo. The story unfolds quickly and is very engaging. And of course, the animation and effects are great. The background theme is haunting and I've already added it to my list of favorites. There are some cheesy teen romance, comedy and some serious moments in Korra that will definitely, successfully appeal to older fans of the genre as well as the younger Avatar fans. I am adding this to my own Avatar collection :) Glad to finally watch more Avatar action.

As a note to fans of Aang - Nick has kept its promise of ensuring that the 2 series do not have much overlap. So of course, the beloved characters from Airbender either 'guest star' for brief moments or not at all. I've made my peace with not being able to enjoy more of the gang's (Aang, Katara, Toph & Sokka) adventures and whole-heartedly welcome this series as it gives me the opportunity to relate to new characters and watch their cool new bending (and non-bending) moves. So be warned, if you're expecting a rehash of Aang's series you will be sorely disappointed (and most likely give Korra a low rating). If you do embrace Nick's promise you will see the brilliance and hard work that has gone into making Korra a fast-paced entertainer.

Comment/disclaimer unrelated to product:
Some reviewers apparently feel the need to point out that the reviews that disagree with their own are either 'engineered by Nick' or somehow too good/bad to be true or plain imbecilic and then add to the melee by pointing out that it doesn't matter if their own reviews are disagreed with as its just an opinion/review and is totally valid. Honestly, review whatever you want and if you do so wish give a magnificently glowing positive or an utterly damned negative review. We all have a right to an opinion and are entitled to voice it in a safe environment. I ask only that you please make sure you're polite enough to not insult other reviewers. Amazon is a great place to shop & enjoy movies, music etc that relies on its customers to give honest reviews that will help other prospective buyers make their own decisions. I for one do not believe that Amazon would be stupid enough to allow fake reviews or accept some compensation from the product manufacturers to engineer positive reviews and believe that no one is conspiring against anyone here. And oh, just by the way - my review and comment are my opinions. It is not my intention to hurt, defame, conspire against or con anyone in any way, shape or form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Korra Arrives Early April 4, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I just finished watching the first episode of Legend of Korra. I was very pleasantly surprised that it arrived early on Amazon. I have been looking forward to this show since seeing the preview at last year's Comicon. It is definitely different from the first three season of Avatar but very enjoyable. Korra is a very strong, willful teen girl who can kick butt and take names, but like Aang has a lot to learn about the world and her place in it. This episode does a good job of introducing new characters, giving some closure on old characters, and introducing a new world for the rest of the series. It left me exciting and looking forward to the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Start April 15, 2012
This new series has huge potential, and so far is living up to it. The world and characters have had a significant update, however there is still a good sense of continuity. The unique animation style, top notch writing, and excellent voice acting are still there.

The main character is likable, and different enough from the previous avatar to not force to many comparisons, but similar enough that you can pick up on shared traits that tie the two characters together. The supporting cast has not been introduced yet, other then a mentor who seems like a good balance with the main character, and her animal companion who is awesome and lovable.

The world has moved forward from its condition as seen at the end of the first series. This world seems to be facing its own industrial revolution, with bending as its impetus. The legacy of the first avatar is not a perfect world, which I appreciated a lot, some may not like it but I think its essential, a story needs conflict.

Overall this is a excellent start. I recommend this to anyone who liked the first series, or anyone who just likes good animated adventure stores.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
The show by itself is good. I watched it right after finishing the Last Air bender Series and while its good its not as good as its predecessor, but I still recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Short, Great Potential, Poorly Structured
There is certainly room for a filler in this series and the lack thereof, it ruins the fun plain and simple.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's no Avatar
I love that there is a follow up to "Avatar the last Airbender" but so far the characters lack the humorous playful spark of the series it is built upon. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great show
The last several episodes are available for free on Nickelodeon, but the earlier part is not there. Watching the first part of the season here is a great legal option.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as the original
Nickelodeon, as usual, was lax in their programming updates so several of the episodes that I wanted to watch turned out to be other shows. $30. Read more
