The Volunteer's manual: containing full instructions for the recruit, in the schools of the soldier and squad, with one hundred illustrations of the ... arranged according to Scott's system of infanPaperback– January 1, 1861
I purchased this manual to learn 1840's Infantry Drill for "Kearny's Army of the West". I have been doing living history since 1976. Starting as 1740's French Militia, Infantry. This manual is for precisely 100 yrs. later but amazingly some of the movements and Instructions are the same. I was fortunate to recieve a copy of the photographic Manual for French Company des Las Marines from French Canadian Historian Rene Chartrand. I only wish such a photographic copy was available for this period as well. The illustrations in this book are very descriptive and allow literary challenged individuals to perform the movements with considerable less confusion. I like that all internal pages are facimily of the original manual. I took my paperback copy and glued a piece of 5Oz. leather to outside of covers. Now this book looks period authentic to keep in my Haversack for quick reference and practice.
