Format: Paperback
The Voodoo Doll Spellbook is the direct follow up to Denise Alvarado's Voodoo Dolls in Magick and Ritual and promises to be the first in several volumes. Whereas the former delved into the history and types of dolls, the latter contains over 180 spells and rituals from various magickal disciplines including Hoodoo, Voodoo, Wicca, Paganism, and Ceremonial Magic.

Though these spells come from various traditions, they all have one thing in common, that is, the construction and use of dolls used in the casting of spells. The author gives detailed instructions on how to construct various types of dolls (poppets, effigies, waxen images, etc...) as well as how to use them to achieve various goals. The spells themselves are organized by purpose in an A to Z format for easy reference.

In addition to the spells, Alvarado has gone a step further and included various formulas for oils, and powders such as Lost and Away Powder and Bend Over Oil among others which some practitioners may be familiar with and which are utilized in the casting of spells. The inclusion of these formulas alone is well worth the price of the book. Throughout the Voodoo Doll Spellbook there are several photographs and illustrations of various voodoo dolls in the author's collection which add to the mystique of this powerful tool of magick!

Although the author has included some basic information on the theory behind how magic works, I suggest you refer to Alvardo's previous work Voodoo Dolls in Magick and Ritual if you wish to delve into the history of voodoo dolls. The Voodoo Doll Spellbook is a practical, hands-on grimoire on the art of casting spells using various types of dolls. Here you will find everything you need to construct a doll in order to cast a spell for virtually any practical goal. This is a reference that you will return to again and again.

I have purchased several of Ms. Alvarado's books The Voodoo Doll Spellbook is my most used go to book on doll making. To give a brief run down on what to expect from this book Ms. Alvarado gives both history and pictorials on dolls used in various cultures and their uses at the time. As an academic scholar she breaks down the history of a large variety of the dolls, usage and origins in an easy to understand conversational tone, without talking down to her audience. Unlike some of the other books I have on Voodoo dolls she even sites here sources. The history and superb pictures were interesting enough that both me and my teenager enjoyed it, he in fact, used her book as a source in a Social Study project of prehistoric art of Europe. As well as using her picture of The Venus of Willendorf by Mathis Kabel to sculpt a wax replica that is still on display at his school.

Now on to the making of the dolls, her detailed "How to's" and pictures of her own art were so easy to follow, I have created several dolls of my own of various kinds. My favorite being the altar dolls with the sticks and the Spanish Moss.
The only injustice to herself the author did was make it too easy for others, like me and my son, to create high quality dolls at our kitchen table. The book even comes with easy to use patterns.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to make and use Voodoo dolls for what ever purpose. You wont be disappointed.

I LOVE this book and highly recommend it! A valuable addition to anyone's Hoodoo and/or Voodoo library. This book will show you the "how to" and "how not to" of Voodoo Doll spell work. Excellent for a beginner or an "old pro"! If you want to know about Voodoo Dolls and how to work with them...this is your "GO TO" book!

I wanted to like this book and i think it has some good spells and a good wide range.... for me as a beginner, it was too hard and i had a hard time conceiving of how to really carry them out. I guess i needed more basic instructions or more thorough instructions. So i think this is a good book but not for beginners.

I really like this book, it's filled with all kinds of spells, I'm a little bummed out that it doesn't have many spells that specify what you'd like changed, but there are some good ones. BUT the only problem is, all the supplies needed to cast all these spells are herbs and oils that you can only find at an herb store, and some of them can only be found on voodoo suppliers websites.. :/ it adds up fast if you have to go buy a bunch of supplies, especially from voodoo suppliers, you could easily spend over $100 on what you need to cast a spell, now how does that make any sense if you need to cast a spell to help get more money? LOL so like in my situation, I don't have the money to buy supplies. But I did do a Novena prayer out of the book to help me find employment, and it worked fast, got a job the next day!

It's an awesome spellbook if you have money to buy the supplies!
