Editorial Reviews

Review

“A fascinating, insidery look at what happens when a commercial entity, Mavericks Surf Ventures, attempts to turn a monstrous surf break into a big-bucks brand. . . . Read it now before Curtis Hanson’s Gerald Butler–starring, apostrophe-deleting movie Mavericks hits theaters next year.” (San Francisco Bay Guardian) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I live far, far from any coast, but I felt every ride, the danger, and the thrill of falling 40 vertical feet only to find your board still clinging to your soles and shooting through the tunnel. But much more than that I loved the characters. So few to love, so many to pity, others that just baffled me. Read this if you love the surf, or read it if you love rich and complex characters. I loved this book. This guy can flat write.

Hard to set it down; a terrific read and masterfully written. Kreidler does a great job of capturing the excitement of the big wave event, the mindset and culture of the big-wave surfer and the motivation and challenges of all those involved in the Maverick's event. The surfers profiled are each fascinating people and Kreidler does a great job at telling their individual stories. You feel like you are there in the water it is so well written and descriptive of the surfing. I recommend this to surfers and non-surfers alike. It is a great story of sport, business and passion.

I've read Mark Kreidler's earlier books and this is the best so far! He has outdone himself. Kreidler is a great writer--he's able to introduce us to the unique culture of world class surfers, make us feel how it must be to surf the Mavericks, and put it all in the context of the related business motives involved. Even if you have no exposure to surfing, you won't be able to put the book down because of the compelling journey of surfer Chris Bertish and Kreidler's masterful writing. He is a great storyteller. I found this true of Kreidler's other books, particularly, " Four Days to Glory: Wrestling with the Soul of the American Heartland." I knew nothing about wrestling, but found the story about the high school wrestlers and their families absolutely engrossing. If you like sports, are fascinated by what it takes to be a top athlete, and enjoy human drama, you'll find this book very entertaining. I'd buy the hard copy even though I have a kindle because the pictures are both amazing and wonderful.

Very well written. Easy to read, and the characters were well-defined. I recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.

I have read most of the books written about Mavericks. This had new (to me) information that I had not heard about before. Mark does a nice job of making it personal by looking at it through the eyes of an individual surfer.
