Editorial Reviews

Soon after finishing her acclaimed 2008 album Apple Tree, Colorado-born, Nashville based singer-songwriter Katie Herzig received a fateful phone call. "I sat down to paint one da I hadn't painted in years then I got a call asking me to write a song for the Sex and the City movie," she says. "So I put down my paintbrush and haven't painted since!"What she did instead, as one assignment led to another, was write music for numerous films and television shows, and in the process, find a surprising and exciting direction for her new album, The Waking Sleep, her first release on Marion-Lorraine Records/Mercer Street Records. "I was trying new things," says Herzig, "getting outside of what I would normally do as an artist. It was really fun and invigorating to use samples and build tracks digitally. I loved creating like that, and it really allowed me more freedom, because I was doing something less personal, and creating for something else." But there was also no doubt that at some point, this accomplished artist would return to the distinctive, heartfelt material that made her name. After initially fronting the Colorado-based band Newcomers Home, Herzig released her solo debut, Watch Them Fall, in 2004, followed by Weightless two years later. When she relocated to Nashville, she immediately started to catch the attention of her fellow artists and was invited to perform as part of the remarkable new talent showcased on the Hotel Caf‚ and Ten Out of Tenn tours.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album worth buying December 25, 2011
By Amanda
Format:Audio CD
I heard one of her songs in the theater from this album called Midnight Serenade. I loved it and decided to give the rest of the album a chance. I did not think I would love it as much as I do.

I'd recommend it to people who like folksy music. I told my father that he would like it. He's more into folk artists than I am.

I've never heard of this artist before and I'm glad that I was given the chance. Looking forward to hearing other songs from her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great music for many occasions and moods March 6, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
I first heard Katie Herzig performing with Andrew Bell on a recording for SXSW 2011. I wanted to hear more and I was not disappointed. This alboum impresses me throughout. It fits many different moods. There is fare that seems more light and fun like "Oh My Darlin'" and "Best Days Of Your Life". Then there are the more atmospheric songs like "The Waking Sleep" and "Lost & Found". However, they all carry a complex layering and are a treat to hear.

A great record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Yet from Katie October 19, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
With each new CD that Katie brings out she keeps getting better. I loved Apple Tree, but The Waking Sleep is a step above. Less accoustical guitar with more electronic sounds, vocals, and strings. The latter provided in large part by the cello of Claire Indie. There are a number of tracks on this CD like Best Day of Your Life that are just fun and easy to sing along with. Songs like "Make a Noise" and "Lost and Found" have a great full, rich sound to them and I can listen to them over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another spellbinding album from Katie Herzig June 3, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I first saw Katie Herzig live in Saint Louis when she opened for Dar Williams a couple of years back. I immediately fell in love with her music. I recently saw her again in Saint Louis, this time headlining at the Old Rock House, and was even more impressed with her musical and lyrical talent. I own a couple of her albums and this one very well might be my favorite. The entire album is hauntingly beautiful and richly layered. I recommend "Lost and Found" and "Closest I Get" if you are in the mood for a ballad and "Oh My Darlin'" and "Best Day of Your Life" if you are interested something more upbeat -- although really every song in the album in fantastic. Buy this album. You will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nailed It! October 29, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This is the perfect music. The lyrics are profound and contemplative, the beats are strong enough to help me get my house clean, the hooks are engaging and make me want to sing along, but as catchy as it is, this is still fantastic music. I had this CD in my car for several weeks, and I kept wanting to hit the back arrow and listen to lost and found over and over again. I would say it's the strongest track, but the whole album has a building energy and a beauty that makes me want to listen to it over and over, and then it gets better with repeated listenings. I'm glad I bought this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Waking Sleep June 3, 2012

My boss said to me you are the only person I know who writes checks and buys CDs! Supporting artists who write great music is noble. (The check thing...well....working on it.) Herzig nails it with the amazing track --> Lost and Found, the balance of the CD is equally awesome. This day I bought K'naan and the newest Norah Jones. While a fan of both, Herzig got more play time. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars supberb with tremendous variety November 25, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I recently discovered Katie by hearing her song Beautiful Inside played at the end of an episode of the HBO's Hung. With some research I both ordered this album and got to see Katie perform live all in a matter of 1 week. She's immensely talented with an incredibly unique voice and songs that really pull you in and make you want to sing along.

Then this is the CD for you. This is a fanciful album and is evocative of a sunny, warm spring day. Not every song is delightful, but as a whole, the album is very pleasing, well crafted, and may well put a smile on your face and make you feel hopeful and maybe a bit more confident.
