The inevitable expansion of "The Walking Dead" universe continues with the next hardcover collection in the comic franchise. Having been a huge Dead fan since the first graphic novels, I have watched the enterprise turn into an outright phenomenon. I've reviewed it all from the graphic novels, to the collectibles, to AMC's television production, to the latest incarnation--the novelization by series creator Robert Kirkman and tidy horror writer Jay Bonansinga. "The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor." But nothing gives me more satisfaction than keeping up with the epic in its original format and here's the latest scoop.

Book Seven collects the following two chapters:

Volume 13: Too Far Gone (4 Stars): Now, I had heard some initial disappointment about this volume--and for those looking for general mayhem and violence, this is certainly one of the more subdued chapters thus far. I have to say that initially I agreed. With Rick and clan installed in a new community, there are dozens of new characters sharing center stage. I found this off-putting at first. But what happens in "Too Far Gone" is far more important than just another attack. Rick's growth and character development are a highlight and how he, and the others, start to acclimatize to their new surroundings has surprising emotional resonance. The characters face the crossroads where they're allowed to start feeling human again and start to face the moral repercussions of the things they've done and will have to continue to do in order to survive. I ended up really feeling connected with "Too Far Gone" in a surprising way. If you're open to seeing "The Walking Dead" as a fully rounded epic, these moments of introspection are entirely crucial!

The seventh collected hardcover volume of The Walking Dead finds the series continuing the trend of being the most gut-wrenching and shocking horror comic since...well, maybe ever. This collection finds Rick, Carl, and what's left of their crew adjusting to life in the new seemingly-serene sanctuary they've discovered, forging new relationships with their new neighbors and just trying to put the bombastic hell of the world they've traversed for so long behind them. Naturally, things don't quite go that way, as we soon learn that things aren't at all what they seem. For a series that is at this point over 80 issues in length, you'd figure that The Walking Dead would have become a caricature of itself, and shockingly it hasn't. Robert Kirkman manages to inject so much depth into these long-running characters that we see new sides to them pop up at the most unexpected of times, especially our hero Rick and just how far he'll go to protect his son Carl. The concluding pages to this volume are a sure-fire gut punch, and will leave you salivating to see what happens next. All in all, whether you're a long time reader of the comics or are new to them thanks to the success of the AMC television series, The Walking Dead is still spectacular, and will still shock the holy you know what out of you as well.

I have been following this story since 2003 and it has had its ups and downs [the period after the Governor-Hunters]. I still remain devoted just to see where Kirkman is going to take the story next. Book 7 picked up right where 6 left off [in the Washington D.C. wasteland] and kept me glued to the pages.

PROs:
An ever-evolving zombie group survival storyline that keeps you turning the pages
Excellent writing & drawings - the characters seem like very real people
Lots of zombie chomping & evil human survivors [gunplay, hacking & slashing]
If you love the AMC TV series then there is no question you'll like these books, just make sure you read them in order
The black & white adds to the apocalyptic & chilling atmosphere

CONs:
Still not as good as Book 1.

NOTE: This is an ADULT graphic novel series and I do not recommend for children under 16.

Pardon me while I rant a little.

THIS HARDCOVER COLLECTION MADE MY OCTOBER 2011 PERFECT.

Clearly, if you're buying this or considering it, you've read Walking Dead Vol. 1-6, or the single issues, or the tradepaperbacks... If all you've done is watch the TV Series (The Walking Dead: Season One), you're going to be neck deep in blood/guts. Not quite in over your head, but there is so much going on.

And its all incredible. One minute you're heart's breaking over one character's revelation, then you're celebrating a small victory that means so much more given the context (you know... living in the Zombiepocalypse), but then the unthinkable happens, or it doesn't, then it does, or did it? Yea. It did. Everyone is f''ked.

And at the end of the book, wow. I can't imagine what Vol 8 is going to have instored for me. After the crescendo of the past six hardcovers, how is Robert Kirkman going to follow up this climax??

What the heck!!! the title of this review describes my feelings toward book 7......how is it that Robert Kirkman continues to write such amazing stories!!!! Book 7 is brilliant and its expanding story isn't one to miss!!! 5/5, it is brilliant. We are introduced to a town that is safe away from the zombie horde. Kirkman created a town that we thought was safe, only to keep us on edge right until the very end. And the ending to book 7.....holy moly!!!!! I want to read book 8 straight away!!!! Another major character dies! and a major character is critically wounded in battle, leaving you wondering if he/she survives!!!!! Definite read. If you don't read The Walking Dead, you are missing out, there is no possible way to not love it. If there is an infinite amount of universes with infinite amount of possibilites, it is impossible for one of those universes to have a person who has read the walking dead not like it.
