More About the Author

Robert Kirkman is a New York Times bestselling author known for being the cultural zeitgeist of the comic book industry. He maintains one prerogative in every undertaking: quality. It is Kirkman's belief that good people who produce good writing and good ideas make comics people love. Kirkman was recently made partner at Image Comics, and continues to revive the industry with refreshing new characters. AMC is adapting his bestselling series, The Walking Dead, into a TV series (set to debut in October 2010), and his books are among the most popular on the iPhone and iPad's "Comics" app.

I picked this up and read it over the course of a weekend. It represents quite a journey. The story is very believable, but I didn't realize how much I'd been drawn in by it until I finished reading. Right away, I wanted more. Robert Kirman has a short afterword in which he promises a second hard cover volume after the next twenty four issues come out, and I'm already looking forward to getting it. I want to know what happens to these characters next.

The story and characters are very well done, and the flow of the story benefits from it's ongoing nature. The characters have time to evolve, their plight has time to set in, and the world has time to start moving on. I found myself really emphathizing with the characters as their world fell apart and their food became scarce, I found myself getting excited for them when they found safe places to stay, and I found myself growing sad and angry for them as they faced perils not only from without, but also from within. Kirkman's story telling is straight forward, but he has a strong grip on his world and it's affect on his characters.

The first seven issues collected here are drawn by artist Tony Moore, with the remainder of the book being drawn by Charlie Adlard. Moore is a bit more talented, and his issues look a little better, but Adlard does a fine job with facial expressions and story telling as well. I would have preffered Moore's art for the entire run, but overall the art is good throughout. Also, while this book is black and white, the art is grayscaled very well, giving the book much more depth than most black and white comics I've seen.

As stated in the previous review, you don't need to be a Zombie fan to enjoy this book. I've never gone out of my way to watch a Zombie movie before, but I truly enjoyed this book. Strangely enough, I have now ordered a couple other Zombie books from Amazon to see if I enjoy them as well.

Its no secret that The Walking Dead is one of the most popular comics of the decade. So without going into detail about the strengths and weakness of the story itself, this review is going to focus on the Omnibus publication specifically.

The Walking Dead Omnibus Volume 1 attempts to combine issues 1-23 all under one cover, and does so very well. The comics are published without break to create one continuous story. The paper and binding is of professional quality, and it feels great in your hands. Also with this edition are some never before published behind the scenes sketches and drawings now made available for the first time.

For die hard collectors it should be noted that this is the 2nd edition, and not the 1st.

My one gripe with the Omnibus edition is that it does not contain the Letter Hacks section that is published with the original comics. But this small imperfection is only a personal opinion, and doesn't effect the quality of the story at all.

For someone looking to add the walking dead canon, this edition is high quality reproduction that will look beautiful on your bookshelf.

This book edition is the best way to read the walking dead series. It's very nice production and should last for decades in my home library.

The only downside is you have to wait a lot longer to catch up on the series because these books come out many months after the comic.

The Amazon discounted price makes it worth it, it would be tough to justify at the full retail price.

I'm a big fan of the TV series and since they are in between seasons, I needed to feed my hunger for more. I checked out different ways to collect the comic books and decided on the Omnibus version. This is Volume 1 and appears to include the first 24 issues of the comic in a continuos graphic novel format. You can't tell where one issue ends and another starts. This format works well for reading. The story line is different and interesting. Different enough so it isn't like reading a rerun of the TV show but familiar enough that you can relate to the characters you know from the show. The book is large and well made with a beautiful paper jacket around the nicely bound book. Feels substantial in your hands. I was surprised by the profanity in some of the dialog, I haven't read many comic books in the last 20 years and didn't expect it. I'm not offended in any way, but thought comics were geared towards kids and this would be rated R in a movie format. Evidently this was directed towards older teens and adults and I've been out of the comics loop for quite awhile. Its a good story line, very good artwork in black and white on high quality glossy paper and I think the quality is well worth the discounted price on Amazon. When I bought this, I wasn't familiar with the different formats for graphic novels like this. The "Book" versions appear to have 12 issues in a paper back format and the "compendium" appears to have many more issues than the 24 in this Omnibus hard cover version. I picked this one mainly because it is hard cover and more collectible. I think the most economical way to collect the series would be with the compendium format and if I would have realized what it was, I may have opted for that one based on cost.Read more ›
