I don't know whether any part of this story is factual, but it doesn't really matter. The author captured the insanity, the horror, the hopelessness of prison camps during World War II. I was filled with revulsion and I wondered yet again - How could this have happened? And what can we do to make sure it never happens again? I suspect this is what the author intended ...

Expert Use of Words April 17, 2011

In The Walking Men, seven Jews in Jena, Germany during World War II, face execution at the hands of their own Jewish community, when, on the eve of their execution, Hitler's men show up to intensify the already incredible evil.

I purchased and read this story as part of a writer's exercise in which the participants were asked to read and comment on something we would not otherwise have read.

This story filled that requirement, and taught me a bit about writing as well.

Through most of the story, I had no idea what was going on... but perhaps that was the point... that there was no point...how can the incomprehensible be made comprehensible?

The writer is expert in the use of words... he created gruesome horrific scenes without using, as far as I can recall, a single vulgar word.

Some of today's writers, who seem to know no other way to write, would do well to take note.

Would I read another book on this subject? No, I wouldn't. Would I read another book by the author? Yes, definitely.
