From August 13, 1961 until November 1989 the city of Berlin was - in reality - TWO cities. The Soviet Union built a nine-mile wall to keep residents of the Eastern side from escaping Communism to live freely in the West. A whole new generation of young Americans were not born by the time this wall came down and this hour-long documentary produced by Houston PBS will serve to explain how it the Wall came to be.

The producers use rare archival footage to tell the story, but they also were able to get interviews with all the major players who are still living. Former President George H.W. Bush and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbechov are just two. There's also West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and U.S. Secretary of State James Baker.

We learn why and how the Wall was built and how growing protests led to its fall. (and how NBC's Tom Brokaw had a significant part in opening the gates to freedom for the "imprisoned" East Germans). The film ends abruptly before it tells us about the after effects on the East Germans after the fall. This is just as important and the film is - in my opinion - a but too short. Despite this incompleteness the DVD belongs in every "World History" class and school video library.

Refreshingly non-Partisan(Considering It is PBS),The Truth about the cold war and the stark reality of victims of communism.GDR from it's misguided inception to it's much deserved end shows the fallacy that socialism is.Hopefully one day Cuba can be Free As well As China,North Korea and Vietnam the last-so-called "Utopias" holding out.

The program title is accurate in that it looks at the history of the Berlin Wall and does a good job of it. It is a focused look at The Wall, but that close focus leaves out much of the larger story of the border between East and West Germany.

What American military personnel merely called "the Border" was an over-860 mile demarcation that also separated family and friends via fences and mined death strips while guarded by border troops in towers and chained dogs. As in Berlin, the Border split the country, split travel routes, and split towns. We in the West could walk right up to it (often having our photos taken by guards in towers, just like in Berlin) and see the East Germans either studiously ignoring us or perhaps invisible to their gaze -- it may have been too hard to look at the West.

The program The Wall is a useful look at some of the history of the Cold War.

I am a former German teacher and I love this PBS documentary. I used it to introduce the Cold War to my German III students. The documentary includes authentic footage, personal stories from eye witnesses, and testimonies from politicians such as George H.W. Bush, Mikhail Gorbechov, Helmut Kohl, and Condoleezza Rice. Many of my students expressed really appreciating the history that was taught in this film and one girl liked it so much that she wanted to purchase her own copy of the film! This movie was previously available on Netflix, but has since been removed. I'm glad I was able to purchase a copy for my classroom and I may end up being a copy for myself. This film does an excellent job of covering a truly incredible piece of history.

This was an eye opener for me. I'm a history teacher and usually don't teach this portion of the Cold War. However this year I took on the duty of teaching US History and was required to do an intense study on the subject. I downloaded this documentary to give myself some audio/visual insight before tackling the subject. I liked it so well I ended up showing it to my classes.

Growing up in the time of the Berlin Wall I remember hearing stories about the injustice people were dealt. This documentary goes into the wall's creation, what Berliners were facing, and just what life was like in Berlin for both sides. If you are remotely interested in this time period, you should give this documentary a watch.
