Book Description

April 13, 2004
Accessible and impassioned, here is an eye-opening look at the right wing strategy to reverse the gains American women have made over the past 50 years. The War on Choice chronicles the actions being taken at the highest levels of government to turn back the clock on women's rights.

With the White House acting in anti-choice lockstep with the majorities in both House and Senate, religious extremists are now in key decision-making posts, our federal judiciary is filled with recent appointees whose values are drastically out of step with the pro-choice sentiments of the majority of the American people, abstinence-only sex education is now the rule, ideology has trumped science in domestic and global health policy, and the Supreme Court balance in favor of reproductive freedoms is perilously close to toppling. But while many of the individual facts are known, no one until now has connected all the dots and drawn the Big Picture that shows exactly how radical and how successful this quiet revolution has been.

Judge by judge, law by law, and appointee by appointee, The War on Choice speaks the truth about what is happening, and also tells the stories of some of the women whose lives have been affected by these court decisions and federal policies. A keen analysis of current events, combined with a hands-on plan of action for those who want to raise their voices in protest, this book will be riveting reading.

And there is no one better equipped to write about the insidious, step-by step chipping away of rights, or about what we can do to fight back, than Gloria Feldt, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Her thirty years of work with the organization combined with her personal experience - as a woman who came out of the same West Texas political landscape as did George W. Bush but faced a very different economic and social reality as the mother of three children by the age of 20 make her the ideal spokeswoman for those who are alarmed by the current political climate.?

This book will be a wake-up call, describing in jaw-dropping detail the story of what the anti-choice movement is doing to the rights to birth control, abortion and privacy.?

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"Women's reproductive rights are under the greatest threat we've faced in the past thirty years," writes Gloria Feldt, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. In The War on Choice, Feldt describes the right-wing campaign to end reproductive choice and warns women who value reproductive rights that "zealous, noisy, persistent extremists" and "arrogant" politicians are eager and able to return women to "the stifling culture of the 1950s" when abortion was illegal and sometimes fatal. Feldt--who has come a long way since she got pregnant at 15 and married her high school boyfriend because she saw no other option--presents an disturbing array of anti-choice and, indeed, anti-women quotes and activities from right-wing politicians, legislators, and activists. Her aim is to "open our eyes and mouths" and teach readers how reproductive rights are being chipped away and will ultimately be chopped down if action isn't taken. She presents convincing arguments that not only are legal abortions threatened, but also the rights to contraception and pregnancy-prevention education. She offers dozens of specific actions that women can take to mobilize pro-choice. Recommended both for women who remember life before reproductive freedom and younger women who take this freedom for granted. -- Joan Price

From Publishers Weekly

The right wing is eroding women's reproductive rights, and America's pro-choice majority must sound the battle cry, writes Feldt, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, in this provocative work. The "war" goes beyond abortion, Feldt claims, to encompass "the right to have full access to family planning information, facilities, and products, the right to have children or not, sex education for young people that goes beyond the abstinence-only education being promoted by the right wing, and the right to medically accurate information." Feldt assumes her readers are pro-choice (she says it's necessary to "speak to the choir"), and for them, this book reveals how doctors are giving ideology-based information to patients, the rights of fetuses are being elevated and U.S.-funded organizations abroad are forbidden to teach family planning. Feldt's angry and personal tone, coupled with her liberal quoting of conservative sound bites (e.g., "There is no way to have premarital sex without hurting someone") makes for thought-provoking, challenging reading. She excels when giving concrete plans for how individuals can activate change, but her strong opinions leave little room for disagreement. For example, pro-choicers who support the Unborn Victims of Violence Act (aka the Laci Peterson Law) could feel alienated by some of Feldt's assertions. Oversimplifications and unsupported statements also mar the work. This book isn't for those on the fence about choice, and it definitely won't convince conservatives. However, it's an excellent tool for staunch supporters of reproductive rights; it will rouse readers to fight for change.

More About the Author

Gloria Feldt knew when she was five years old and saw her first poem recited publicly that she wanted to be a writer. But her passion for social justice propelled her life's work in a different direction first. Her latest book, "No Excuses: 9 Ways Women Can Change How We Think about Power" is the culmination of what she learned on the way. She is a sought after keynote speaker on women, power, and leadership and also conducts workshops to give women the practical "power tools" in "No Excuses" in bite-sized takeaways they can use at work, at home, or in their civic and political life.

Gloria was a teen mom who rose to become president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America where she led the charge to get contraceptives covered by insurance plans and made the organization a political powerhouse.

Her previous books are "Behind Every Choice Is a Story," "The War on Choice," and the New York Times bestseller "Send Yourself Roses" co-authored with actress Kathleen Turner. She founded GloriaFeldt.com and its blogs, Heartfeldt and 9 Ways. She teaches "Women, Power, and Leadership" at Arizona State University.

Vanity Fair named Gloria to its Top 200 Women Legends, Leaders, and Trailblazers, Glamour named her Woman of the Year, and Women's e-News "21 Leaders for the 21st Century." She's proud to have been mentioned more often than Betty Friedan in Kate O'Beirne's anti-feminist tract, "Women Who Make the World Worse," because that must mean she's doing something right. A social media addict, (please) find her on Facebook, Twitter @GloriaFeldt, and LinkedIn. She and her husband, Alex Barbanell, share six children and fourteen grandchildren.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Great Set of Issues in Need of Charisma May 31, 2004
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
While The War on Choice alerts us to the determined and highly organized threat to reproductive freedom for women -- and for men -- it needs to rise to the level of war it reports. Only 39 pages in the chapter "Fighting Forward" point the political direction for Pro-Choice citizens.
The book is another example of why Pro-Choice activists are losing the media war. The greatest weakness of the book is that it only describes the enemy. It fails to put a human face on the tragedies of women and families who face tragedy without help. How does Tay-Sachs disease affect a family? What about a 12-year-old impregnated by a family member or step father? The anti-choice movement gains "moral" ground despite the fact that their advocates bomb clinics, assassinate providers, and rape a 15-year-old girl (e.g., John Burt in Florida)? The author and other Pro-Choice activists need to develop the emotional hooks and popular language that will attract those who haven't given, and won't ever give, much thought to the issues. Feldt needs to realize that the war is a public relations war, not just a political one.
I recommend a companion book, if you can find it, by John M. Swomley, Jr., "Compulsory Pregnancy: The War Against American Women."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Man's Perspective May 3, 2004
Format:Paperback
Until recently I never paid that much attention to
reproductive rights. I knew that I was pro-choice, and
I was lucky enough to attend a private high school
that offered real sex-ed (including information on
contraception and STDs) and not just abstinence-only
classes. But The War on Choice demonstrated for me
that reproductive rights aren't just about women -
they are about men too, both as women's partners and
in their own right. While issues like abortion may be
more relevant to women, although they affect men as
well of course, things like medical privacy are
equally important no matter what your gender. Any man
who thinks that because he's male he doesn't have to
worry about his reproductive rights should read this
book and think again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book to Motivate Feminists Everywhere! July 1, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book really illustrates why we pro-choice women need to be on guard. The Bush Administration and ultra-conservative groups are fully mobilized against American women and our right to choose how and when we reproduce. I was especially interested in the chapters on how to fight back. A great read if you want a toolkit for becoming an active pro-choice feminist.
