The War Within covers a lot of ground and does an excellent job of it. I loved the multi-generational approach through out the book.. Flashbacks to the Vietnam war introduce you to Meredith, an army nurse, and the woman she loved, Natalie Robinson, and whose heart she broke. At the same time, her granddaughter Jordan is falling for Natalie's niece, Tatum, an Afghanistan vet now wheel-chair bound.

Yolanda Wallace does a great job pulling this all together into resolutions that work for the rich characters she has created. And what a joy to see characters over 50 finding love and joy with each other while dealing with the intricacies of family history and expectations.

This is a fascinating book with truly memorable characters. The author describes it as challenging to write, but she's definitely risen to the challenge. The book works on a number of levels and the Vietnam sections are both moving and convincing. The only negative is that I didn't want it to end and would have loved there to be more space in which to further develop the relationship of the younger couple.

This novel was quite enjoyable. The scenes set in Vietnam were harrowing and vivid. I loved the relationships of the three Army nurses, and also seeing them 47 years later and following their story. The subplot involves the granddaughter of one of the nurses and the relationship between the two is well drawn. However, the secondary romance plot involving the granddaughter and the niece of one of the nurses felt thin, and the story did not develop, but seemed rushed to an ending. I would have loved the book to take more time with their relationship, delving into the issues between them. I would have appreciated more novel, and then the epilogue would not be necessary, but could be incorporated into the plot.

I am excited to read more works by this author.

What a great book and well delivered story. I must say that it is a realistic insite of what lesbian soldiers had to deal with to serve our country. The storyline may be fine tuned to the main characters Meredith and Natalie. The thinner sub plot of the granddaughters was a valuable story line but rather thin and felt rushed. Overall it is a well thought out and developed book enjoy some realistic history of our sisters in uniform and a touch of modern love stories.

I absolutely loved this book, and couldn't stop reading it until the final page! Readers meet the two main characters, nurses Meredith and Natalie, in Viet Nam where they are both nurses. The scenes from that war are harrowing, as the threats to hidden lesbian soldiers. Even with no PDA, threats from others, rumors, etc. could cost a soldier her career. Then, Wallace skips 47 years, and readers meet Meredith as a widow, traveling with her grandaughter, who's on summer vacation from U.C. Berkeley. As luck would have it, Meredith and Jordan end up on the small Georgia island where Natalie lives. Meredith and Natalie have a chance to try to regain what they once had. Meredith is also reunited with Billie, the Lt. Col. of their unit, who is now dying. The scenes are real, the characters are real, and the quandary that Jordan finds herself in when she falls for Tatum, wheelchair bound because of injuries she gained from her tour of duty in Afghanistan is real. A wonderful read!

The War Within by Yolanda Wallace was a captivating read. Very well written. I'm sitting here trying to find the words to tell how my heart is trying to decide if it is filled with joy or aching in pain. A truly wonderful journey through war and loss and the realization of two women's desires. I would like to share a small excerpt that to me, gives you the true taste of this story.
"Whether you choose to claim your destiny or allow someone else to decide your fate is entirely up to you, Meredith. But I need you to do me a favor." She sighed as if she was reluctant to say what was about to come next. "Thank you for visiting the way I live, but please don't come back unless you intend to stay. It's too dangerous. For you and for me."
Wow Yolanda, just wow.

This book is written in such way that is impossible to put down . The characters are so real ( maybe they're ) . you find yourself rooting for Natalie , waiting for Meredith to decide . I don't want to give the plot away . You need to judge for yourself . I laugh , cry and I didn't wanted to read the last page . It gave me hope , someday maybe I will find that kind of love .

Thank you Ms. Wallace - I give you 20 stars and you deserve them for writing this wonderful book. I can't wait for the next one .
