Book Description

You are Zeb Carter, a deep black, special-ops agent based in New York. You work for a U.S. agency that doesn’t exist.

You hunt terrorists, eliminate gangsters and wipe out threats to national security. You are ex-Special Forces and have a carefully constructed past. No one really knows you. No one needs to. You deal in death.

You have never turned down a mission. You have never failed one.

You are in the Democratic Republic of Congo to track down rogue mercenaries linked to the agency. They are killers, suspected of training rebel forces who are planning a coup.

Locate. Observe. Record. Do not engage.

That’s your mission brief.

You travel in the Congo and come across their trail of violence and death. You make your dossier and as you are preparing to leave, you come to a village.

You witness an atrocity of such magnitude that even your seen-everything-before eyes are shocked.

But the mission comes first.

Or does it?

5.0 out of 5 stars Ty Peterson's The Warrior May 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a very good thriller with adventure, suspense, challenges of
true gruesome atrocities occurring verus secret political cover ups,
kidnapping and some history of mining in the Congo. There is some
humor and family relationships involved adding to the plot.
The author is able to weave together past events into the present
smoothly and without difficulty. The twists & turns within the story
keep you holding your breathe while sitting on the edge of your
seat.
The main character & his friends have unique traits used for
survival. These skills are exhibited throughout the story.
Zebediah Carter, an ex-Special Force is a private military
contractor sent into the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is
about to wrap up his observation mission when he comes to a
village where US ex-military men are committing gruesome
atrocities. Carter calls this group “ The Rogue Six “. Even though
his handler tells him to ignore what is happening, Carter intervenes
taking out three of the six.
Back in the states with orders to let the other “Rogue Three” alone,
Carter digs into their whereabouts. Circumstance arise that Carter
needs to handle with his crew.
What a astonishing ending to a good thriller!!
Don’t miss reading this book.
I received this ebook as a gift from the author. My opinion is my
own. Thank you Ty for a good read.

This book simply was not believable and, in addition, was poorly written and edited. It was a significant disappointment and a challenge to complete. The only reason that I didn't rate it one star was that there was a moderate amount of suspense and a bit of a twist at the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise - 3.5 Stars December 8, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I rarely read a self-published/indie author. My experiences have been bad and the books were worse. I had read many positive reviews of Ty Patterson's The Warrior and decided to give it a shot. I can honestly say that it is one of the best written indie novels I have read. It is not perfect by any means but it is better written than other novels I have read by "published" authors during this past year.

Plot summary

The protagonist, Zeb Carter, is a security consultant with a past shrouded in shadow. Zeb witnessed atrocities around the world but an event in the Congo has come back to haunt his memories and aims to take his down. With help from the Broker, a man who trades in information, Zeb works to bait and trap a killer while his prey is working to do the same to Zeb.

My Take

This novel is a thriller of the Action/Adventure type. In my opinion, this novel would appeal to fans of James Rollins, Steve Berry and Matthew Reilly. I would say that the authors writing style is closer to Reilly than the first two. The book is short and the action is, at times, frantic.

Like Reilly, the author spends more time developing the action and moving the story than he does developing the character. There is some character development but it is rather minor. Unlike Reilly, the cast of characters is much smaller and Carter is a lone gun character.

The author does not waste space. He focuses on what is necessary, avoids filler and gets to the point. Generally, this would be a major drawback in my review. Fortunately for the author, when I comes to action/adventure, it put those preferences aside.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rogue Six, now Rogue Three May 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story starts with Zeb Carter, ex-Special Forces and now private military contractor, in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo). He ends up at the village of Luvungi and witnesses terrible atrocities committed against women and children by a group of men he calls the Rogue Six. After killing three of the group, he follows the other three to the U.S. to avenge the villagers.

Carter is a bigger-than-life hero. Able to kill with all kinds of weapons including his bare hands, he tracks the monstrous trio including their leader Carsten Holt and asks for help along the way from friends with specialized skill sets, not only to help find and kill the Rogue Three but also to help protect family and friends. I especially liked Broker, tech genius, and young boy Rory.

Fast paced, full of action and colorful characters, I enjoyed this thrill-a-minute revenge themed thriller.

I do wish the backstories of the characters had been developed more. And the book could have used a bit more editing for punctuation and word usage.

But if you like thrillers or adventure stories, I think you will like this first in a series by author Patterson.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Start January 12, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
Book 1, in the Warriors series

“The Warrior” is not very big book around 152 pages or so but is one that definitely packs a punch from start to finish. The story invokes a world of corruption viewed by a man with questionable moral values, a contract killer named Zeb Carter, a man who witnessed a few too many crimes and is bent on his own justice.

The plot is cleverly developed and filled with visual imagery and colourful characters. It moves at breakneck pace like a well-oiled thrill machine. The author uses economy of words and focusses on what is necessary. No filler words in this one he gets straight to the point. This page turner is sharply crafted to set the mood and starts out strong by throwing us right into the action on page one. Some small flashbacks and perspective are used to add depth and to pick our interest till the real revelation comes. One by one side characters are introduced to help move the dialogue along and tie together scenes. We are delightfully teased by the leading man, a warrior with flaws and a voice of a tormented soul. Throughout the author has kept Zeb’s life and persona a mystery. I could not anticipate his next move and stayed entertained and captivated as each scene kept quickly jumping from one to the other. Now as for the conclusion what a cliff hanger I never saw that one coming. Of course I can always nitpick and find weakness but for a first try this one is without any doubts a winner….

The only thing wrong with this book is that it is about 300 pages too short. Characters are distinct and finely drawn . One. Of the best reads I have had in a long time.
