Editorial Reviews

There's trouble brewing in peaceful Glenview, Ohio. That's why four civic-minded citizens, armed with flashlights, walkie-talkies and spiffy new jackets, have teamed up to safeguard their community. But the guys find more than they bargained for when they uncover an alien plot to destroy Earth, and now these bumbling heroes are Glenview's only chance to save the neighborhood - and the world - from annihilation!

This movie definitely is having a rough time with critics and audiences, for various reasons all around. Why though? From start to finish, I was laughing consistently with the goofy and conversational humor of these guys all hanging out and bustin' up aliens together. The aliens looked great (in my opinion) and it was all just a ton of fun. It had may qualities of a campy 80's flick and references abound which made me enjoy a heck of a lot more. Overall, it ain't perfect, but it's a darn good popcorn flick nonetheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and funny from the start November 13, 2012
The lines and humor is crude, but, I liked the roles that the guys played, perfectly suited and well done. Jonah Hill is getting better all the time. Loved the part where R. Lee Ermey runs the guys off his front yard with a shotgun, no one can cuss out a bunch of idiots like him. I thought it was amusing from the start. THe alien photo party was a first! Watch this one if you like these guys, and sci-fi/comedy, (mostly comedy)!

4.0 out of 5 stars ALIENS EXIST. DEAL WITH IT August 19, 2012

This review is from: The Watch (DVD)
After the night watchman (Joe Nunez) at Costco was brutally murdered and his skin removed, Evan (Ben Stiller) forms a neighborhood watch in his peaceful Glenvue, Ohio community. Unfortunately not many people show up to join the group and all have their own reasons and issues.

Evan- Costco manager. Very straight and needs to be in charge. Takes things seriously, but doesn't take care of business with his wife (Rosemarie DeWitt).

Bob- (Vince Vaughn) Likes to drink and share his man-cave with his friends. Has a teenage daughter (Erin Moriarty) he keeps his eye on.

Franklin- (slimmed down Jonah Hill) Has the best lines. He quit school to become a policeman. He failed the written exam, physical, and the mental health screening. Wants to be a vigilante. Lives at home with his mother. Couldn't help think about George Zimmerman and Richard Jewel.

Jamarcus- (Richard Ayoade) He is from England and has a Korean girl fantasy.

The four guys are considered a joke. When they discover the aliens, they get up for the task.

I loved the use of the classic rock sound track which included The Doors, J. Geils Band, and Chris Cross who provided a laugh as the phone tone for the salty R. Lee Ermey. The humor rolls with the lines like when Bob asks Franklin, "You failed the police exam, is this illegal?"

There was a lot of good humor. Unfortunately there was a lot of unnecessary crude humor, as the story was funny without it. It didn't need cheap laughs.

PARENTAL GUIDE: F-bombs galore. Brief sex and nudity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hilarious!!! July 31, 2012
I didn't really know what to expect from this movie, but it was a great mix of dirty Stiller/Vaughn comedy and an alien sci-fi genre. Still plays an active participant in the community named Evan Trautwig. When a security guard at his store is brutally killed, Evan is determined to find the killer and bring them to justice, so decides to form a Neighborhood Watch. Only 3 men are interested. Vince Vaughn as Bob, the father of a rebellious teen and wants to party with his new buds. Jonah Hill plays Franklin, the crazy one of the group who failed the written, physical, and mental health tests at the police academy. Finally, we have Jamarcus, a recent divorcee. Together, they form a bond a rid the neighborhood of delinquents and aliens from another planet. It was hilarious and awesome to see these guys fight aliens and save the world from extinction. I would definitely recommend THE WATCH!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars "The Watch" is awesome July 19, 2013
I read some of the reviews given regarding, "The Watch", and I have to say, some of these people don't know what the hell they're talking about. This movie is one of the best comedies in recent memory, and I've seen most of them. This film is far better than, "This Is The End", and I'm a big fan of Seth Rogan & company, so ... take it for what it is. The humor is vulgar, but hilarious, and the alien/Costco connection is about as good as it gets when you're looking for a storyline that actually makes sense. Not a big Ben Stiller fan, but he's pretty damn good in this film. Again, take it for what it is, but I just added this to my collection, and that says a whole damn lot.

Honestly I don't know why everyone is giving this film so many bad reviews. When I watched it I personally thought it was a great movie as did everyone I talked to about the movie who had seen it. Honestly I thought this movie was the best alien movie I'd seen since Independence Day and I'm usually not the biggest fan of alien movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Irreverent but hysterical!! December 3, 2012

I loved this movie! Totally dirty but so funny! Jonah Hill is fantastic but nobody beats "Moss" from the IT crowd fame! He was so funny as an infiltrating alien! I immediately bought it on blu ray. Might be to graphic for kids under 13, lots of sexually explicit jokes. I loved it!!

2.0 out of 5 stars What a sad miss January 17, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
Despite extreme fans and detractors, the movie-going public will normally do a pretty good job of correctly evaluating a movie. It's one of the few times where human beings can get something right as a committee. LOL "The Watch" bombed at the box office, only taking in about half of its estimated budget, and there were good reasons for this.

This looked like an interesting idea. I like Ben Stiller in almost everything he's done. The same is true for Vince Vaughn. When I came across this film the fact that I'd never heard of it was a big warning sign. I tried it out anyway.

Were there some laughs? Yes .... unfortunately only about one for every fifteen or twenty the writers intended. There is always something distracting about a movie where you recognize attempts at jokes that just aren't funny.

The movie is also schizophrenic. It can't make up it's mind what it wants to be, and in the process doesn't really commit to anything. It did prove that you can't try to squeeze comedy, horror, family angst, sci-fi, drama, quirky neighbors, oddball pals and buddy schisms all into one movie. If they had picked any three or four of the above they might have gotten away with it.

Next, the pacing just fails. Because of all the unnecessary elements I discussed, the movie jumps around to so many sub-plots that it continually spoils its own mood. For example, after a scary alien encounter our main characters spend a LOT of time on what are actually mundane and uninteresting family issues before the alien story gets its next dollop of attention.

There are enough other problems that it wouldn't even be fair to pile on with the significant violations of the film's own internal logic concerning the aliens.
