Don't let Deidre Combs light-hearted approach in The Way of Conflict fool you...she is up to serious business here. She offers deep insights into the nature of every conflict and into the heart of every person. Her lessons apply as well from your smallest spat to our world's oldest and most deadly dilemmas. It is my hope that her work sinks a hook into each reader as it did into me and gets us all re-thinking the possibilities for resolving of our worst personal conflicts. From there the resolutions to age-old conflicts in the Middle East, between nations, between peoples are but steps away.
This is not a light read. It is powerful. Like The Artist's Way it has the power to change you and your point of view. It is well researched and has an extensive Bibiography. And all for a very reasonable list price!
Beyond a bargain. A Gift.

This is one of those rare books that contains a deceptively simple idea that has fascinating and universal applications. It will change the way you think about conflict. I enjoyed the fact that it was practical but also philosophical. It seems very well researched. I particularly enjoyed the multi-cultural use of myths and stories to illustrate the concepts. This is a book full of wisdom.

Format: Paperback
The Way of Conflict by Deidre Combs simply presents a paradigm shift towards conflict. The ususal understadning of conflicts as a negative entity to be avoided is challanged with evdence: conflict is a powerful opportunity for growth and evolution. The Way of Conflcit unearths ancient wisdom from East to West. This treasure of wisdom is exaplained in terms that could be easily understood by the souls of current generation, how ever I could see the deliberate attention that the author has payed to preserve its depath and detail.
Earth, water, fire and air are things that we see and use every day and they seem to have nothing to do with conflict. The beauty of the Way of Conflict is the unusual wisdom that the author brings in from these usual objects. In the first part of this book, the reader is guided through personality types that represent the above mentioned four elements. Ready-to-use tools are presented to identify the personllity types of the individuals. Postive and negative features inherent with each elemental personality are clearly described. The end of the first part of the book elaborates how these earth, water, fire and air traits could go beyond individuals to characterize groups or teams and their dynamics in conflcit.
The most interesting and enlightening thing I found in the book was the conflict process or the Conflict Mandala. This great summarization of wisdom to which the author referes to frequently is very useful not only to understanding the teaching but also to remebr and recall. After reading the Way of Conlict, when I am faced with a conflict in real life, I step back and think "Where am I standing now in the Conflict Mandala?".

Resolve disputes and overcome differences with the help of The Way Of Conflict, where common traps to progress are outlined and implications of conflict outside the situation at hand are considered. Chapters handle everything from initial conflicts to escalation to violence, using first-person and real-world experiences to explore problems and solutions.

At the beginning it is easy to digest but as it goes on becomes more difficult. But as Deidre says she is resuming over 2000 years of different cultures and very difficult to implement it or understand it quickly. Just need to be patient and willing to change.
