Nick Wagner's guide to the catechumenate is hands-down the most engaging, readable and bracing book available on this subject. It is written for Catholics who work with The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) in a parish setting, and is accessible to volunteers as well as professionals in ministry. There is plenty of literature about the RCIA on the market today, from academic works to how-to manuals, from multi-volume resource books to small brochures and handouts. The Way of Faith stands out among all the current literature for two reasons.

First, as an overview of the process The Way of Faith compares favorably with Thom Morris's classic, The RCIA: Transforming the Church. It is detailed, complete, practical and correct with respect to the vision. This isn't easy. The RCIA is complex, and it's much easier to pretend it conforms to something we already know well, like classroom instruction, than to represent it as it really is: an experience of conversion in community that has the liturgy at its heart. Wagner gets it right.

Second, because of Wagner's crisp writing style and contemporary examples, the book never comes across as dry or pedantic. He speaks to his readers as a coach, with humor and fresh ways of describing things, inciting them to do this work creatively in their own setting. The book includes specific tools, such as checklists, rehearsal plans, and outlines for catechetical sessions. But that's not the best thing about it. The best thing about this book is the clear, compelling conviction that underlies the whole work: "Conversion to Christ is an awesome change. It is the most awesome change we will ever experience." (p. 11). Initiation as Wagner describes it is a marvelous work and a great adventure.

This book is the best resource available to get your team going and continued training for RCIA! It is very detailed and hands on. It continues to be very helpful in training new team members and sharing the vision for RCIA with others in the parish. It is also user friendly and to the point. I highly recommend this resource to those just in the beginning stages of developing their program, those who need to make some changes and for those who need to fine tune some stages.

I am liturgist for our RCIA team and this little book has given me so many ideas for how to organize our rites. The rites need to be something that our candidates can appreciate and remember and this book will help it do exactly that!

This book is an essential guide for anyone involved in the catechumenate. It breaks down the RCIA process into clear, practical and easy to follow steps. It gives RCIA team leaders and members great informatiuon to let them work with their pastor and liturgist and musicans to create dynamic meaningful ceremonies, as well as enable the RCIA team to work with the whole parish community. If you only bought one book to understand what the RCIA is wanting you to do, then this is the one.
